Toshiba's new TFT Liquid Crystal Display is Industry's Smallest 9.5-inch Display Panel

15 March, 1995

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corporation today announced the introduction of the world's smallest 9.5-inch flat panel display, a thin-film transistor (TFT) color liquid crystal display (LCD) that meets the challenge of bringing large, high performance screens to increasingly compact portable computers. The small panel size reflects the application of Toshiba's advanced capabilities in manufacturing engineering and semiconductor mounting to shrinking the outer frame and reducing overall panel size.

Marketing of the LTM09C035 will start today with a sample price of 150,000yen. Mass production is scheduled to start from May at monthly production level of 20,000.

The relentless miniaturization of information and communications equipment has recently triggered growing demand for sub-notebook PCs, full-function PCs that are even smaller than the notebook size computers now widely used. With the increasing popularity of these small, light PCs has come demand for bigger screens, a requirement Toshiba meets with the LTM09C035.

The small panel size is achieved by relocating the driver ICs. In larger panels, they are mounted to the right and left of the display, and on the same plane as the display face, increasing the panel's width and overall area. In the LTM09C035, the connection leads are folded, and the ICs are mounted on the underside of the frame; use of tape automated bonding technology for the driver ICs assures that they have the slimmest possible profile. Size is further minimized by a re-engineering of the LCD

printed circuit board size to reduce its size. The result is 23.5cm. (vertical) by 16.5cm. (vertical) panel that brings a 9.5- inch diagonal TFT LCD to computers smaller than a piece of A4 paper.

The advanced TFT panel used in the display utilizes 6-bit LCD driver ICs to support 260,000 colors. The material surrounding each pixels has a lower reflectivity than that previously used, increasing image clarity and resolution.

The market for LCDs is increasingly rapidly, with the main demand 1coming from information equipment, particularly portable computers. The 1994 market size, estimated at 560 billion yen, is expected to grow by 40 percent this year. Demand for TFT LCDs is leading the growth, as they offer advantages in response times and image clarity and resolution.
