DVD-RAM Verification Services Start

25 December, 1997

DVD Forum

The DVD Forum today took a major step toward supporting the commercial introduction of DVD-RAM with the announcement of the start of verification services for manufacturers of DVD-RAM drives and discs. It allows manufacturers to verify their product's compatibility with DVD-RAM format version 1.0, announced in August 1997 as a format for DVD rewritable disc authorized by the DVD Forum. Manufacturers successfully completing the verification process will be able to display the DVD-RAM logotype on their products.

DVD-RAM extends the large capacity and diverse capabilities of DVD to a rewritable medium that will find its initial application in computers. The verification services will become available from December 26th, 1997, and will offer manufacturers the confidence that their products fully comply with DVD-RAM specifications. The service is also expected to promote the commercial availability of DVD-RAM and to provide a major impetus to the already fast-growing demand for DVD products.

Verification tools will cover both DVD-RAM drives and discs. They consist of the DVD-RAM Standard Disc and Reference Signal Disc for drives, and the Primary Standard Evaluation System for discs.

The DVD Forum has offered verification services for DVD-ROM and Video equipment and products, including movie software, since November 1st, 1996, and they have contributed in enabling producers worldwide confident business promotion.

Verification services for DVD-RAM will be made available at three DVD Format Verification Labs.
