Background of Development

The new LSI integrates a 16-bit RISC processor, an MPEG-4 video decoder, an interface for digital video signal output and 4Mbit of DRAM, providing all necessary functions for play back of MPEG-4 video data. The LSI offers a price-competitive MPEG-4 solution that will support additional functionality in hand-held equipment with no increase in size. Mobile terminals incorporating the new LSI will be able to download and play back motion picture content from the Internet and receive real-time news content by wireless.

Toshiba is directing its attention and resources to advancing the capabilities of mobile equipment and networking. The company supports the emergence of Internet-based content distribution to mobile phones and PDA with a wide range of products, including high-resolution low-temperature polysilicon LSI, BluetoothTM wireless technology and third-generation cellular phones. The development of the new MPEG-4 LSI reinforces these efforts. Toshiba has also taken a leadership position in finalization of the specifications of MPEG-4, which can realize wireless data transmission with a highly efficient rate of data compression and the support of error-correction code (ECC).
