Toshiba's New 2.5-inch HDD Offers World's Highest Capacity per platter

Leads way in advances in HDD for 21centuries mobile products

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today strengthened its leadership in 2.5-inch hard disk drives with the announcement of the world's highest capacity drives in this fast growing form-factor. The two new drives achieve an areal density of 26.7 gigabits per square inch, far surpassing that of any other 2.5-inch HDD yet announced, to realize a single platter capacity of 15GB. Toshiba has just started sample shipments of two superslim drives in this new series: the 15GB MK1517GAP and the 30GB MK3017GAP. Both are only 9.5mm high, the slimmest size achieved at this capacity. Both can withstand up to 175G of operational shock and 800G of non-operating shock.

In this age of information appliances, high-capacity, high performance HDD are essential to support new generations of portable personal equipment. Toshiba is the pioneer in small form-factor HDD, and its range of 2.5-inch HDD offer technical excellence backed up by a rugged design and reliability.

The large capacity of Toshiba's new 2.5-inch drives allow them to handle the most demanding operating systems, applications and files, including large video sources, while their small size suits them for incorporation in a wide range of products. They will bring much higher storage capacities to portable PCs, support new capabilities and increased functionality in PDA, and open the way to much more versatile music players, video cameras and other digital products. The 30GB capacity of the MK3017GAP makes it particularly attractive for audio-video applications, including recording and editing of AV data, as does its advantages over 3.5-inch HDD in portability and lower power consumption.
