TOSHIBA AND SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC. TO MAKE A TECHNICAL ALLIANCE FOR 0.13 MICRON RULE SEMICONDUCTOR EMBEDDED DRAM LOGIC PROCESS 12 March, 2001 Toshiba Corporation Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. TOKYO, March 12, 2001 -- Toshiba Corporation (Toshiba) and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that they entered into a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the parties' cooperative relationship on 0.13 Micron Rule Semiconductor Embedded DRAM Logic Process for semiconductor fabrication. This process will be used for PlayStation and PlayStation2. By integrating DRAM and high speed logic circuit on a single silicon, it becomes possible to secure a very wide bus bandwidth, introduce innovative architectures, reduce power consumption, achieve higher speeds and integrate multiple number of ICs onto a single chip. Toshiba has already established the 0.13 Micron Rule Semiconductor Embedded DRAM Logic Process and using this, PlayStation and PlayStation 2 will seek for the further integration of the chips while realizing very high performance. The semiconductor used in PlayStation and PlayStation 2 has now grown into one of the largest applications of this process. The details of the collaboration will be subject to the definitive agreement to be worked out by the parties. The alliance with Toshiba will reinforce the relationship of the two companies already established through development and production of the graphics processor, used for PlayStation, and Emotion Engine, a CPU used in PlayStation 2, and Oita TS Semiconductor Corporation, a joint venture between Toshiba and SCEI.
