New PC's establish new benchmarks for slimness, weight and battery performance in mobile PCs

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today announced the introduction of the world's lightest*1) and thinnest*1) series of notebook PCs: PCs offering superior body strength and durability, a battery life of up to 12.5 hours*2), and embodying the design concept of "TRUE MOBILITY". The new PCs will be launched in Japan in June 22nd as the dynabook SS RX Series, and shortly afterwards in overseas markets as the Portégé R500 Series.

Toshiba's PC Business
Toshiba created the portable PC market with the 1985 launch of the T1100, the world's first laptop PC. The company has retained its vanguard position ever since, and driven market expansion, by constantly adopting state-of-the-art technologies, and by promoting and supporting moves for industry standardization. Today, Toshiba pursues a tightly focused, two-fold strategy. Through its "Differentiation Strategy", Toshiba seeks to offer new value through innovative products that create and develop new market. In its "Commodity Strategy", the company seeks to advance the overall business through economies of scale that support worldwide delivery of competitive products.

The notebook PC market is now the high growth segment of the PC market, driven by growing demand from mobile computing and replacement of desktop PCs. In developing its new mobile PCs, Toshiba thoroughly researched the wants and needs of mobile users, with a view to providing a product embodying its "TRUE MOBILITY" concept: thin, light, with long battery life. To this potent combination Toshiba has added body strength, superb quality, advanced security, network connectivity, and usability. With the resulting PCs, Toshiba will seek to bring new levels of value to the notebook PC market and to increase market share.

Key Features
1. World's lightes*1), thinnest*1) notebook PC with integrated optical disk drive and long battery life.

The new line-up includes the world's lightest notebook PC, a version with flash memory storage and optical disk drive that weighs in at 848 grams. Its sister model is the world's lightest with a hard drive and optical drive, and weighs just 959 grams. All PCs in the series share another claim to fame: the world's slimmest case, only 19.5mm at the slimmest point. And all can boast of long battery life, thanks to a high capacity battery pack with a life of as long as 12.5 hours. The combination of all these factors adds up to a range of notebook PCs that redefines the meaning portable computing.

2. World's first 64GB flash memory; indoor/outdoor transreflective LCD.

Another world's first in Toshiba's new "TRUE MOBILITY" PCs is the integration of a transreflective 12.1-inch diagonal widescreen LCD with 0.2-mm glass. This unique innovation allows use of the PCs in virtually every type of lighting condition. Users can also switch the backlight on or off, depending on whether they are indoors or outdoors, and so ensure the best possible screen image.  Indoors, the LCD backlight display produces an image rich in saturated colors and superb quality. Outdoors, the transreflective screen uses natural sunlight to bring the display's colors and images to life, allowing users to expand the mobile computing experience. The line-up also includes the world's first notebook PC to integrate a 64GB flash memory and a 7-mm thin DVD-SuperMulti Drive, which will further expand the potential of mobile computing, improve PC usability, and cut energy consumption.

3. Light, thin, with enhanced robustness.

The secret of the new PCs ultra light and slim design is Toshiba's use of its proprietary High Density Mounting Technology to create a miniaturized PCB with dual-sided component mounting. This innovative process allowed Toshiba to make a main PCB 35% smaller than those in company's previous model. Toshiba also turned its attention to small details that add up to a big difference in the weight and size of materials and components used in the new PCs. In addition to the 7-mm thin DVD -SuperMulti Drive, the new PCs integrate a new LCD display incorporating a thinner glass-epoxy PCB, and a new hinge weighing almost 50% less than the one it replaces.

Toshiba was first in the industry to adopt magnesium alloy in the main case of its PCs, and has continued to refine casting know-how. With the new "TRUE MOBILITY" line-up, the company achieves cases that are as robust as they are light, and that help to realize the stylish design and sleek profile of the new PCs.

Of course, any truly mobile PC must be rugged. And Toshiba's new PCs are strong enough to have sailed through the test conducted by Germany's "TÜV Rheinland Group". Tests*3) included a 75cm drop, and a submergence test*3) to confirm resistance to accidental spills of liquids on the keyboard—and not only water, but coffee and soda as well. This feature allows users to save work and shut down the system before any liquid can get through to the circuitry—helping to prevent loss of data.

4.

Dual Core CPU; Optional "Slim Port Replicator".

The new PCs feature the latest Intel(R) CoreaaTM 2 Duo Processor U7600 (1.06GHz), providing high performance and low power consumption. In the office or at home, the PCs can be connected to a dedicated optional "Slim Port Replicator", without any need of additional cables.
