| Toshiba Group Establishes Environmental Vision 2050
06 November, 2007
TOKYO -- Toshiba Corporation today announced Environmental Vision 2050, the Company's long-term commitment and determination to contribute to a better environment by recognizing and responding to environmental issues. In implementing this vision, Toshiba aims to improve the value and eco-efficiency of its products and business processes and to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by the equivalent of 57.6 million tons per year in FY2025 compared with FY2000, while concurrently working to enhance its environmental efficiency and raise overall eco-efficiency to a factor* of 10 by FY2050.
The participants at the G8 summit held at Heiligendum this June agreed to aim to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. By that time, the global population is expected to exceed 9 billion people, and it will be essential to overcome environmental impacts produced by population growth, such as pressure on resources and a heightened greenhouse effect. Through Environmental Vision 2050, Toshiba aims to contribute to society by realizing the twin goals of creating value with the products and services it delivers to the global community, and sustaining a healthy Earth environment. The company will endeavor to meet specific goals and address environmental issues through two approaches: Energy Vision and Eco Products Vision.
Meeting ever-growing global energy requirements and combating global warming at the same time is a demanding challenge. It is one that Toshiba aims to meet through Energy Vision, by enhancing its nuclear power business and promoting deployment of high efficiency thermal power plants and CO2 fixation, while also working to advance the capabilities of power transmission networks and realize new energy sources. The Eco Products Vision stresses the enhanced development and delivery of environmentally friendly products, improved assessment of product life cycles and impacts; and the manufacture of products that ultimately provide consumers with a high level of value.
Toshiba targets further efforts to reduce emissions of CO2 by the equivalent of 57.6 million tons a year in FY2025, which is close to the annual emissions of Tokyo (60 to 70 million tons a year) and Greater London (about 50 million tons a year). Within that overall target, Energy Vision targets a reduction equivalent to 47 million tons a year, which is around the same emission amount of CO2 produced by eight thermal power stations.
In the same time frame, Eco Products Vision targets a reduction of 10.6 million tons a year. Toshiba aims to expand eco-efficiency in both its energy and eco products by applying process innovation and value innovation.
Toshiba introduced its Environmental Vision 2010 in FY2006, and is currently nearing a doubling of its eco-efficiency factor against FY2000. The company will further commit to the sustainable development of the environment through Environmental Vision 2050.
