Toshiba Establishes New Software Technology Lab with The College of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi

Company to contribute to training personnel
to develop embedded software and systems in Vietnam

TOKYO -- Toshiba today announced that it has established a new laboratory to develop platform technology for embedded software and embedded systems with The College of Technology (Coltech) of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Under an agreement signed today, Toshiba and Coltech have become partners in the "Toshiba-Coltech Software Technology Laboratory" and both will promote cooperative research and development in platform technology of embedded software and systems. Looking to the future, the lab is expected to provide Vietnamese software engineers with training and know-how in embedded software and systems, and provide a platform for Toshiba and Coltech to promote R&D projects.

The "Toshiba-Coltech Software Technology Laboratory" has been established on the Cau Giay campus of The College of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Toshiba is supporting the lab's initial set up and operating costs, will participate in selecting research themes of the Lab, appoint technical advisors and provide technological support for embedded software and systems development, and also participates in developing a curriculum for embedded software and systems. Coltech will provide the lab's premises, and the staff, researchers and students who will carry out research and development works.

Toshiba has long standing relations with Vietnam that includes providing scholarships to Vietnam's two national universities, Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, and to Hanoi University of Technology, the country's leading universities. At Hanoi University of Technology, Toshiba sponsors a scholarship program in nuclear power that contributes to developing human resources for nuclear engineering. Toshiba will seek to further enhance its partnership with these universities so as to secure excellent human resources for its fast growing operations in Vietnam.

Toshiba is also promoting development projects in Vietnam, and in April this year established Toshiba Software Development (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. in Hanoi, as a wholly owned subsidiary dedicated to strengthening development of embedded software and systems for digital consumer products. Toshiba will promote business opportunities in this highly promising market.


Vietnam continues to see positive economic development that has translated into a GDP growth rate of around 8% in recent years. This, combined with the country's population of over 84 million, second only to Indonesia in Southeast Asia, is supporting Vietnam's emergence as a promising future market. The Vietnamese are skilled, capable workers, and the government is promoting a national policy that emphasizes training IT engineers, assuring the country with high-tech potential essential for R&D in such complex areas as embedded software and systems.

By cultivating long-term partnerships in various fields, Toshiba will seek to find and train excellent personnel who can support business growth, cultivate R&D capabilities through training programs, promote employment at local subsidiaries, and seek business opportunities in the growing Vietnamese market.
