Toshiba Opens Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Osaka

4 Dec, 2009

OSAKA— Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it has opened an Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Osaka at its Kansai Branch Office. The opening ceremony for the new consulate was held earlier today and was attended by His Excellency the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Japan, Mr. Akylbek A. Kamaldinov, and government representatives from Kazakhstan and Japan.

The opening of the Honorary Consulate follows the October 22 appointment of Mr. Shiro Kawashita, an Executive Officer and Corporate Vice President of Toshiba Corporation, and General Manager of the Toshiba Kansai Branch Office, as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Osaka.

Commenting on the opening, Ambassador Kamaldinov said: "I would like to express my gratitude on the opening of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Osaka. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen the economic and cultural relationship between our two countries."

Mr. Kawashita also welcomed the opening and said: "It is a great honor for me, and for Toshiba, that I was named Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Osaka. I will do all I can to contribute to enhancing a warm spirit friendship and goodwill between Kazakhstan and Japan."

Following an April 2007 agreement between Kazakhstan and Japan on the development of a strategic partnership in nuclear energy, Toshiba has worked to deepen exchanges with the country. In June 2008, the company was honored to welcome Kazakhstan's President, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, to Fuchu Complex, when Mr. Nazarbayev led a presidential delegation to Japan. This April, Toshiba donated sakura trees to Kazakhstan, for planting in Astana and Almaty, the country's two main cities.

Toshiba will continue to strengthen its partnership with Kazakhstan, and to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the people of Kazakhstan and Japan.
