Toshiba Wins Major Order from Hyundai Rotem
for Locomotives for Korea Railroad Corporation

30 Mar, 2010

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it has won a major contract from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem Company under which it will supply key electrical equipment and systems for electric locomotives for Korean Railroad Corporation (Korail). The contract covers traction drive systems and auxiliary power supply systems for 56 6,600kW electric freight locomotives. Delivery of the equipment will start in May 2011 and continue through to April of 2012, under a contract with a value of more than 10 billion yen.

Toshiba has been active in the South Korean rolling stock market since the 1990s, and has supplied electrical equipment for more than 1,000 railroad vehicles. This experience in Korea, combined with a reputation for product reliability and proven experience in supplying high power electric locomotives in China and South America, has earned a high evaluation that supported Toshiba in winning the contract from Hyundai Rotem. In order to maximize operating effectiveness and to assure comprehensive support for Korail's maintenance operations, Toshiba will transfer the technology for the supplied equipment after verifying its reliability within this project.

South Korea is promoting investment in new rolling stock as it replaces current locomotives and increases freight volumes. In line with this trend, Korail is purchasing new locomotives. Toshiba is responding by positioning South Korea as a key market, and will seek to secure further contracts in cooperation with Hyundai Rotem.

There is a modal shift to rail transportation that reflects a growing awareness of environmental concerns and of the safety and amenity of rail. As a result, global growth in rail systems is anticipated, and total infrastructure investment is forecast to reach 20 trillion yen by fiscal year 2016, against 16 trillion yen in fiscal year 2009.

Toshiba is now seeking to win orders to supply electrical equipment for electric locomotives at the global level, and to accelerate the globalization of its transportation system business.
