Toshiba's Italian Subsidiary Wins Contract for Key Element of Smart Grid System

26 Sep, 2011

Tokyo, Japan, September 26, 2011—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that its Italian power systems subsidiary, Ansaldo Trasmissione & Distribuzione S.p.A (Ansaldo T&D), has won a contract to supply a key element of a smart grid system to Rome-based ACEA Distribuzione S.p.A (Gruppo ACEA), one Italy’s leading public utilities. Installation of the equipment will start in December 2011 and it is expected to be commissioned and on line by the end of spring 2012.

The system to be supplied by Ansaldo T&D comprises a 10kW photovoltaic (PV) power generation system; a 45kWh SCiB™, Toshiba’s breakthrough rechargeable lithium-ion battery; chargers for electric vehicles (EV); and the overall system monitoring and control unit (μEMS).

Once installed at Raffineria, an ACEA substation in Rome, the system will provide an integrated solution for generating (PV), storing (SCiB™) and delivering electricity to charge EV. Such charging stations are seen as an integral part of smart grids and the next generation smart community concept for interactive power generation and distribution.

In a separate equipment tender, Landis+Gyr’s, a global leader in energy management solutions for utilities in which Toshiba recently acquired a majority shareholding, was selected to provide smart meters for the system. Smart meters have interactive communication capabilities and can provide real-time provision of data the status of the PV system, the remaining powers stored in the SCiB™ and level of demand at the EV chargers.

Toshiba, Ansaldo T&D and Landis+Gyr will collaborate in seeking to win orders for the commercialized systems and will draw on the know-how obtained through the execution and operation of the project.

Toshiba Group hopes to closely support ACEA’s smart grid system development plans and will seek to expand its smart grid and smart community businesses in Europe.
