Toshiba to Supply Turbines for Qian Wei Hydro Power Plant Project in China

Helping to meet power demand in China with hydroelectric equipment
4 Nov, 2016

TOKYO-Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (THPC), a Chinese subsidiary that manufactures, sells and maintains hydroelectric equipment, has won a major order to supply five 55.6-megawatt bulb hydro turbines* and related generating equipment to the Qian Wei Hydroelectric Power Plant in Leshan, Sichuan, China. The order was received from Sichuan Minjiang Port & Shipping & Electricity Power Development Co., Ltd, an operator of river management and navigation facilities in Leshan. Delivery of the equipment will start from February 2017.

The Qian Wei Hydroelectric Power Plant will be constructed in the Min River basin. The bulb hydro turbines that THPC will deliver realize highly efficient power generation in rivers with a low head.

Commenting on the order, Takao Konishi, Vice President of the Thermal & Hydro Power Systems & Services Div. in Toshiba's Energy Systems & Solutions Company said, “Demand for renewable energy is growing fast in China, and Toshiba is pleased to help increase capacity. We established THPC in 2005 and since then it has installed 87 hydro turbines and hydro pump turbines and 101 generators. This new order builds on THPC’s delivery record in China and its advantages in technology and production quality.”

The government of China is responding to meet increased electricity demand and the need for environmentally friendly and low-cost renewable energy by expanding its plans for hydroelectric power generation, a baseload power supply in China, and plans to increase capacity from 319GW in 2015 to 380GW in 2020. Toshiba positions China as focus market for hydroelectric power and continues to strengthen its presence with its technology and accumulated know-how.

In 1894, Toshiba Group delivered the first Japanese-made 60kW hydroelectric generator to the Keage Power Station, Japan’s first commercial hydroelectric power plant. Since then, over more than 120 years, Toshiba has gained world-leading expertise and experience in hydroelectric power generation, and today offers a wide range of hydroelectric products that meet different flow rates, heads of rivers and generation capacities. Toshiba’s Energy Systems & Solutions Company supports efforts to secure a stable global power supply with renewable energy solutions, including hydroelectric, geothermal, wind and solar power systems.
