TOKYO― Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that the Science Based Targets initiative has approved Toshiba Group’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets for FY2030 as fully meeting science-based targets (*1) for "keeping the rise in global temperatures this century well-below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius," as defined by the Paris Agreement (*2). Toshiba announced its submission for approval in a September 18 announcement, “Toshiba Submits Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets to Science Based Targets initiative for Validation.”

Toshiba Group’s GHG Reductions Targets for FY2030 (For all items below, the base year is FY2019)

Reduce the total of Scope 1 and Scope 2 (GHG emissions generated from Toshiba Group’s own business activities) by 28% by FY2030.

Reduce use-phase GHG emissions of “products and services associated with power supply”(*3) sold in Scope 3 by 50% by FY2030.

Reduce use-phase GHG emissions of “products and services associated with power consumption” (*4) sold in Scope 3 by 14% by FY2030.

 

Scope1: Amount of direct emissions via fuel use at Toshiba Group
Scope2: Amount of indirect emissions via use of electricity and heat purchased by Toshiba Group
Scope3: Amount of indirect emissions generated by Toshiba’s value chain (raw materials procurement, distribution, sales, disposal, etc.) outside Scopes 1 and 2

Toshiba Group will take actions to achieve the above GHG reduction targets.

For Scopes 1 and 2, we will reduce the amount of emissions by 28% by FY2030 through measures that include investing in energy-saving equipment and increasing Toshiba Group’s use of renewable energy in its own business activities.

Under Scope 3, we will reduce total GHG emissions from use of “products and services associated with power supply” sold by Toshiba by 50% by FY2030 by suspending acceptance of new orders for coal-fired thermal power plant construction work, and by promoting retrofitting and improved performance, including upgrades to competitors’ equipment. In addition, we will promote businesses related to renewable energy supply, such as solar power generation and energy aggregation for power supply and demand adjustment, and further promote the development of CO₂ separation and capture technology.

Also under Scope 3, we will reduce total GHG emissions from use of “products and services associated with power consumption” by 14% by FY2030 by implementing measures such as improvement of energy-saving performance through application of power device regarding social infrastructure products, building-related products (air conditioners, lighting equipment, elevators and escalators), and retail and printing equipment, and reducing the operating load of equipment by utilizing digital technology.

Toshiba Group has formulated “Environmental Future Vision 2050,” a new long-term vision with a global perspective that responds to the drive for decarbonization, the transition to a circular economy and a society that lives in harmony with nature. Among its targets are a 50% reduction of GHG emissions throughout Toshiba Group’s value chain by FY2030, against FY2019, as a contribution toward realizing a net zero emissions society by 2050. By acquiring SBT approval, we will strengthen promotion of achieving the FY2030 target.
