History

As Japan’s standing in international society rises there is a commensurate increase in other countries’ interest in and expectations of Japan. It behooves us to open our society as well as our minds to the world outside and invest greater energy in the promotion of international exchange and mutual understanding. For this purpose we must become better communicators so as to enable other countries to know us and our culture better, while at the same time deepening our own awareness and appreciation of the rest of the world.

Japan earned considerable ill-feeling during the nineteen-eighties and nineties due to our excessive exports. Toshiba believed that the root of the problem lay in the lack of understanding between this country and the rest of the world. Therefore Toshiba International Foundation was established in 1989 to enhance communication and promote mutual understanding.

In the twenty years that have passed since then, the Foundation has supported a wide variety of projects throughout the world to foster better relations with other countries.

April 11, 1989 Registration of the Foundation finalized
March 1990 1st symposium sponsored and organized by TIFO, "Japan’s Role in the 90s", held in Tokyo.
October 1990 2nd symposium, "Innovation and Creation", held in Paris.
November 1991 3rd symposium, "Technological Innovation and Society", held in London.
December 1992 4th symposium,"Japan-US Inter-City Exchange Symposium:
Towards Becoming 21st Century Cities", held in Sendai.
December 1993 5th symposium,"Asian Economic Development and Expectations of Japan", held in Singapore.
October 1994 6th symposium, "The Role of Artists in Contemporary Japan", held in Boston.
September 1999 TIFO’s 10th anniversary symposium,"The Values That Japan Should Hand Down to Future Generations:A Re-evaluation of Japanese Identity", held in Tokyo.
2000 In appreciation of TIFO's many years of support for the Louvre Museum, the foundation's name was engraved in the Richelieu Wing.
2001 7th symposium, "Japan and the UK, Asia, and the EU in the 21st Century:
Past, Present, and Future", held in London.
September 2004 TIFO’s 15th anniversary symposium,"Your Way of Life in 2015 as Seen from a Global Perspective", held in Tokyo.
July 2008 1st Toshiba Youth Conference for a sustainable future held in Japan.
August 2009 2st Toshiba Youth Conference for a sustainable future held in Japan
September 2009 TIFO's 20th anniversary symposium,"20 years from now - a changed world, changed lives", held in Tokyo.
August 2010 3rd Toshiba Youth Conference for a sustainable future held in Japan
