21st Toshiba Group Environmental Exhibition

On February 9 and 10, the 21st Toshiba Group Environmental Exhibition was held at Toshiba headquarters in Tokyo. In Environmental Vision 2050, Toshiba Group envisages a world where people lead affluent lifestyles in harmony with the Earth. As a corporate citizen of planet Earth, Toshiba Group is promoting wide-ranging environmental initiatives, advancing step by step toward the fulfillment of this vision by mid-century. The exhibition was organized around Toshiba's three “Green” concepts and their foundation, Green Management. In the three zones corresponding to Greening by Technology, Greening of Products and Greening of Process, Toshiba Group's environmental technologies and activities supporting people's lives and businesses were showcased. The Green Management zone exhibited activities that trigger innovation.

The exhibition featured award-winning products in 2011 Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation, and a range of Excellent ECPs - products with the highest level of environmental performance in the industry in terms of major functions.

Greening by Technology

A Smart Community of the future was presented using computer graphics. Exhibits of the power systems business included photovoltaic power generation and technology to improve energy efficiency.

Greening of Products

Winners of awards in Japan's 2011 Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation were showcased, including the heat pump incorporated in Toshiba Carrier Corp.'s Universal Smart X air-cooled heat-pump system. This was the winner of Minister's Prize, The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in the product and business model category - the highest commendation in the Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation. Excellent ECPs, products with outstanding environmental performance, were also featured, as were Initiatives to reduce environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycles, from the development phase through to final disposal.

Greening of Process

Energy conservation initiatives in fiscal 2010 were exhibited, including Yokkaichi Complex's, success in reducing its power facilities' energy consumption by pursuing potential, an award winner in Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation. Among projects at overseas subsidiaries, a drive by Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. to achieve zero emissions of waste was introduced. Very little waste is incinerated in the Philippines, it is sent to landfill instead. Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. reduced the amount to 0.42% by recycling waste paper, stationary and metals. An example of a cloud-based system for visualizing electricity usage was also exhibited.

Green Management

Communication with local residents and efforts to save energy, the foundations of “Green” activities, were introduced. An example of Toshiba Group's collaboration with stakeholders, biodiversity conservation initiatives at Dolphin Hills*, was featured. These include protection of rare creatures living in the Tsurumi River, which flows through Kawasaki, where Toshiba has factories, and tree-planting, as part of for which Toshiba distributes yuzu (a citrus fruit native to Japan) saplings to employees and their families, with the aim of expanding the area where butterflies can flourish.

* Tama and Miura Hills stretching from the east side of Mt. Takao in Tokyo to Machida, Kawasaki, Yokohama, and the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture is a dolphin-shaped area. The name “Dolphin Hills” was coined by Professor Yuki Kishi of Keio University, who leads TR Network, an NPO.

Special Events

In conjunction with the exhibition, there were lectures on environmental themes and environmental seminars featuring speakers invited from inside & outside Toshiba Group.

On February 9, Mr. Takao Ogawara, President of Eco-Planning Research Co., Ltd., gave a lecture on community development in relation to biodiversity. Based on his research over many years, he explained how birds in cities take advantage of scattered green areas and what can be done to promote biodiversity. On February 10, Professor Taikan Oki of the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, spoke about global water issues and the role of the private sector. Referring to the flooding in Thailand, he discussed how private-sector involvement in water infrastructure systems business reflects the distinctive cultural backgrounds of various countries, including emerging economies.

Environmental seminars by speakers from Toshiba Group addressed such themes as the green marketing of medical equipment and Toshiba Group's management of chemical substances contained in products.
