Using Renewable Energy

Using Renewable Energy

Toshiba Group has used a green power system since January 2005 and has entered into an agreement to purchase two million kilowatts of electricity under a green power certificate systemNote1. In accordance with the contract, at least 4% of the electricity demand at the Toshiba headquarters building has been fulfilled by biomass power generation. While Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd. covers all electric power it uses in its factories with renewable energy, Toshiba Europe GmbH covers 13% of the electric power it uses with renewable energy. In the future, Toshiba Group will install photovoltaic power generation equipment in new clean rooms it builds with the aim of using renewable energy in an even wider range of operations.

The total power supply from Green Power in fiscal 2007 amounts to 2.78 million kWh.

In 2006, the percentage of renewable energy of power supplied by general Japanese electric power companies accounted for 10.0% of the power supply composition Note2. If energy such as solar power, etc. produced by Toshiba facilities, the power generated as per green power certificate system and the share of the renewable energy out of the purchased power is totaled, then the percentage of renewable energy out of Toshiba Group’s total power consumption is estimated to be approximately 10.6%.

Case Study1: Outside Advertisement and bulletin board powered by Soler Energy

As part of long-term efforts to mitigate climate change, the local subsidiary in Malaysia has started installing solar power generation equipment in its several facilities, focusing attention on the effective use of the same. The power demand for the external advertisement board and the environmental section bulletin board has been provided by this equipment.

Case Study2: Installation of Photovoltaic and Wind-power Generation Systems

At Yokkaichi Operations of Toshiba Corp., photovoltaic and wind-power generation systems, when operating at full capacity, generate enough electricity for 100 fluorescent lamps.

The panel shows how electricity is generated and data, such as the amount of electricity generated and the reduction in CO2 emissions, in order to highlight the advantages of renewable energy.
