The "more advanced" ABWR

Use of Large Components in the RCCV

Use of Large Components in the RCCV

Use of Large Components in the Reinforced Concrete Containment Vessel (RCCV)

In construction of the steel RCCV, the first for an ABWR, the steel liners that maintain the airtightness of the concrete wall are fabricated and welded in advance of the reinforced concrete. This is because it is welded on the side facing the concrete, and welding inspection needs a large workspace. Once it is completed, work on the reinforced concrete begins.

Enlarging the size of the component parts of the liner, so reducing on-site work, was a major contributor to achieving the shortened construction period.
The most critical point was the installation of the large components used in the lower liner and moved into the reactor building by a large crawler crane.
