Extended Use of Automatic Welding Machinery

Welding is highly skilled, intricate work. In order to assure the highest quality welds, and to cut down on costs, Toshiba made great efforts to develop a range of automatic welding machines, and to extend the areas where they can be used. Almost 100% of the welded joints in the RCCV liner and the reactor's piping -- 60% of all the welding required in the power plant
-- were automated. Toshiba also developed an automatic welding machine for butt welds of small diameter piping and adapted the design for general use, including automatic welding of instrumentation piping.
