Introduction

Stainless steel and nickel-based alloys are used in critical components of nuclear power plants. These components are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC for short) which is considered one of the major threats to the integrity and safety of nuclear reactors. Given that many power plants have been in service for several decades, the risk of SCC continues to grow.

For application to both BWRs and PWRs, Toshiba-Westinghouse has developed two practical technologies that use leading-edge laser technology to combat SCC one is laser peening technology for preventive maintenance, and the other is underwater laser beam welding technology for repair of existing SCC flaws.
