My job is focused on front-end engineering of the water and steam cycle for either combined cycle or conventional Rankine cycle power plant. My job scope also includes how to increase and improve efficiency and performance of the power plant. Since cycle performance tests done after construction completion is also a part of our job, I can learn not only the theories but also their applications.
Actually what I'd imagined before about Japanese people was workaholics and solid character, but I discovered I was wrong when I started working in my division. Here I can use flexible time which allows us to come later and go home earlier as long as we maintain working hours, so I can adjust and manage my schedule more easily and keep good balance between work and private life. My mentor and colleagues are very kind. They always support and help me if I find any problems in my job. When they explain something they always use simple words and it is very helpful and I can catch the meaning easily. And so, even though Japanese language is the main language here, I can enjoy doing my job.
Joining Toshiba means that I am supposed to live in Japan and, of course, start a new life in a different country that also has a different culture. Japan is not a Moslem country, finding a Moslem community was a problem when I arrived here. But I was assisted by my seniors and HR people so that I could get information about the Moslem community in Japan. In my workplace my manager also prepared a praying room and it makes me feel comfortable that I don't need to panic to find a place for pray.
During the first time I had a culture shock about the cost of living, which is almost three times compared to my country, the food and the climate. Especially the weather! This is my first time living in country with four seasons, so it's a little bit hard to adjust during the winter season which reaches zero Celsius. But after years have passed, I got used with the situation, and how I really feel hot when I go back to my country.
With high technology that has been developed by Toshiba for their products, I think there is no reason to miss this opportunity.
