Joining TOSHIBA

My major is computer engineering so I knew I would love to do networking-related software development job. Toshiba had the position I was looking for. In addition, I have an interest in Japanese language as well as its culture. For these reasons, I thought that having the opportunity to live here would be cool and fit my personal goals.

From the first day the company helped me manage almost everything, such as dormitory, bank account, foreigner registration, health insurance, paying taxes and so on. As for life here, there was lots of culture shock like crowded train, smoking and everything. It took some time to adapt but it was also quite exciting.

My life in Japan

The cost of living is high here, but the salary is enough to live comfortably, go on a trip once in a while, or go back to visit friends and family in your country. Toshiba also has dormitory for its employee which is very cheap.

In Japan, it is very easy to find restaurants from various countries. For example, there is a Thai restaurant near my place that serves Tom Yum and Green Curry.

I usually hang out with friends during weekends. I also plan a trip once in a while for a change. Disneyland and Disney Sea are the top destinations for me. My favorite city is Kyoto where I really enjoyed photo shooting of beautiful shrines and temples.

Improve Japanese conversation skill

Conversation skill is best practiced by really engaging in conversation. The more you speak and listen, the more you get used to the way the language is really used. Luckily, I found a senior who I'm comfortable talking with. It is like having a private tutor. During lunch time or after work, I usually have a casual conversation with my colleagues to practice. Another method is, I watch a lot of Japanese drama and animation and try to notice and mimic how the language is used in each situation.
