Toshiba Receives IEC 61508 (2010) (SIL3) Certification For "Unified Controller nv-safety Series type 1s" Industrial Controllers from TÜV SÜD

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that the company's unified controller nv-safety series type1s industrial controllers has received IEC 61508 (2010) (SIL3) certification for functional safety from TÜV SÜD, the German international certification organization.

Toshiba produces industrial controllers, mainly for use in social infrastructure and industrial systems requiring high-speed control of large-scale systems. Toshiba has added new controllers that support functional safety.

The devices in the unified controller nv-safty series type1s offer enhanced functional safety, and shift user systems from operation mode to safety mode in the event of an accident, reducing the risk of danger. For example, used in combination with other certificated safety device, such as emergency shutdown systems and electric locks, they raise the level of functional safety in that maintenance personnel enter.

IEC 61508 is the basic international standard defining functional safety requirements for equipment and environments, including railways, manufacturing plants, factory automation systems, vehicles and elevators. The IEC 61508 guidelines define three safety integrity levels (SIL) for evaluating product and safety functions with SIL3 the highest level for factory automation systems.

In evaluating the new functions of the unified controller nv-safety series type1s, TÜV investigated the hardware and software, and each phases of development, from product concept to detailed design, TÜV determined type1s's compliance with SIL3 requirements.

Toshiba produces a wide range of control equipment, including industrial controllers, that offer high level reliability and safety. The company constantly refreshes is product line-up in order to respond to evolving requirements and to fully meet customer needs.
