Toshiba Lithium-ion battery, SCiB™ is an essential component to realize a next-generation railway system. Toshiba contributes to develop a smart battery that ensures long life, safety, and eco-friendly system.

Features

SCiB™ is utilized as a battery for storing energy regenerated from trains, and also as an emergency battery for supplying electric power to permit evacuation operation if the power supply is cut off. The battery system is utilized for the hybrid rolling stocks to reduce the total energy consumption of the rolling stock system compared to conventional systems.

System Configuration Examples

Series Hybrid system

Battery Drive

The battery drive consists of the SCiB™ providing electric power to the traction system as well as the APS.

Engine Drive

This mode is the common mode for the diesel-electric systems. The engine furnishes power to the generator, which produces the electric power necessary for the traction system as well as the APS.

Regeneration Drive

When the train is braking, the traction motor becomes a generator, producing electric energy. This energy is stored in the batteries and is also used by the auxiliaries.

Catenary less Hybrid train

Catenary Drive

This mode is the regular mode. The electric energy is provided by the catenary, and is used by the electric traction system, the auxiliaries and the batteries.

Battery Drive

On a catenary-less section, the battery becomes the main electric power supply of the train. The energy is used by the traction system, as well as the auxiliaries.

Regeneration Drive

When the train is braking, the traction motor becomes a generator, producing electric energy. This energy is stored in the batteries, used by the auxiliaries or sent back to the catenary.

Emergency running system 

Ordinary Run

This mode is the regular mode. The electric energy is provided by the catenary, and is used by the traction system, the auxiliaries and the batteries.

Emergency Run

In case of power disruption, electric power feeding cannot be provided anymore by the catenary. Therefore, the battery system provides the electric energy to the traction system and the auxiliaries. SCiB™ helps the train to escape from the emergency.
