Toshiba Group has made June and July the period around the company's July 1st Founding Day, the focus period for social contributions activities, and organized promotion of "Social Contributions Campaign 2005" at all Toshiba Group companies worldwide.

During the campaign period in Japan, regional clean-ups, blood drives, 130-yen charity donations, and collecting of used books and stamps were initiated by Social Contributions Office for employees to participate. Many other activities besides the above, such as summer festivals, lending company facilities to regional sports teams and donations to regional social welfare organizations were also promoted at each site. 20,179 employees in total at 97 Toshiba Group companies worldwide participated in 299 activities during the campaign (the number of employees excludes participants in the 130-yen charity donations and collection of used books).


Regional clean-ups

Fifty-five companies and 4,698 employees participated in 70 activities, cleaning the area along the routes to work to each company and factories, and the area around the companies. Extra effort was placed on activities to tidy up riverbanks and riversides by companies and factories near rivers.

Examples of activities
Toshiba Denzai Marketing Co., Ltd.

Six employees of the Yokohama office started, on October 1, 1999, taking turns cleaning the street in front of the office and area around the parking lot on business days. Flower beds were planted along the street as part of a local event.


Toshiba Logistics Corporation

Sidewalks around the offices and the premises were cleaned for 30 minutes everyday.

Tama River Cleaning Campaign

The Toshiba Microelectronics Center, the Corporate Research and Development Center, and the Komukai Operations in Kawasaki City cleaned two kilometers of riverbank along the Tama River.

Clean-ups by Tosokai

Eight companies from the Toshiba Group in Kumamoto Prefecture cleaned about six kilometers of sidewalk between the Kumamoto Branch of Toshiba Electrical Materials Marketing and Kumamoto Castle, and Ninomaru Park, which surrounds Kumamoto Castle, and collected enough garbage, including plastic bottles and empty cans, to load a two ton truck.

Toshiba receives the Emperor Showa Memorial Award for Encouraging Blood Drives

Toshiba received the Emperor Showa Memorial Fund Award for Encouraging Blood Drives at the 41st national convention of the campaign for encouraging blood drives, held in Wakayama Prefecture on July 13, 2005. The achievement of the blood drives, which had been conducted actively by the whole company over a long period, were praised. Toshiba Medical Systems Corp. and Toshiba TEC Corp. received the Award of the Minister of Labour, and Sekikawa Toshiba Ceramics Co., Ltd. received a certificate of gratitude from the Governor of Niigata Prefecture.

130-yen charity donations

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of the foundation of Toshiba, a collection of 130 yen charity donations was conducted, as an activity in which all employees could participate. For this activity, a matching gift program was adopted, and the company added funds equivalent to 30% of the amount of money collected from employees to the total sum, so that the total amount of all contributions is equivalent to 130% of the money collected from employees. The total amount of money collected from employees was about 11,370,000 yen, and the added amount, equivalent to 30% of this, was about 3,440,000 yen, the total amount of contributions was 14,820,000 yen. Ashinaga Ikuei Kai, an organization which supports children who have lost their parents due to sickness, disaster or suicide, was selected as a recipient of company-wide donations; it received 8,270,000 yen. The remainder was donated to social welfare organization in each region, local elementary schools and the like, by operations departments, branch offices, and group companies. The money collected from workers at the headquarters was used to donate printers and Japanese drums to the following local elementary and junior high schools: Shiba Elementary School, Shibaura Elementary School, and Mita Junior High School.

Under a Matching Gift Program, Toshiba added funds equivalent to 30% of the amount collected from employees to the total sum, so that the total amount of contributions equaled to 130% of the amount of money collected.

Breakdown of donations
  • 6,542,423 yen was donated to social welfare councils and schools in the regions by 28 divisions (companies and departments)
  • 8,272,631 yen was donated collectively to Ashinaga Ikuei Kai by 65 divisions (companies and departments)
In addition, collected goods at the Mie Operations, were converted into cash, and 44,559 yen was donated to the Board of Education of Asahi Town.

Collection activities

Used books, CDs, DVDs, video software, unused telephone cards, spoiled postcards, various kinds of used prepaid cards, and postage stamps were collected and donated to organizations including NPOs. These were contributed to funds for the activities of these organizations. Spoiled postcards, whose total value was 150,000 yen, were donated to the Minsai Center Japan, which supports the provision of educational opportunities to children in Cambodia, and were used for a scholarship fund for children in Cambodia (5 children), Thailand (5 children), and Laos (4 children). Unused postage stamps were donated to and used by the Child Fund Japan, which conducts activities to help children grow up healthy and to improve regional independence in Asia. The donation will be used in the four busineses organized by this organization in the Phillippines and Cambodia.

In addition to the above, the Kita-Kyushu Operations donated children's literature to the Kita-Kyushu City Children's Cultural Hall, and donated items such as used postage stamps to the Kokura-Kita Council for Fosterage of Children's Association. The Kansai area branch donated prepaid cards to the Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service. Toshiba Electro-wave Products Co., Ltd. donated items such as prepaid cards to NPOs.

Note3) An organization which gives financial and psychological support to victims of conflict and disaster across the world. On this occasion, the contribution was used to support childrens education, for example by repairing schools.
Note4) An organization which runs the Darunee Scholarship, which supports the provision of educational opportunities to children in Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. On this occasion, the contribution was used for scholarship funds for children in Cambodia (5 children), Thailand (5 children), and Laos (4 children).
Note5) An organization which conducts activities to ensure that children grow up healthy and works for regional independence in Asian and African countries, with a focus on the Philippines. On this occasion, the contribution was used for activities in the Philippines and Nepal.
