The 4th Award winning activities

The Toshiba "ASHITA" Award was established in 2005 to enhance social contributions activities. The Corporate President Awards are granted to recognize activities with outstanding results. Winners are chosen from all activities conducted by Toshiba Group companies worldwide from August 1, 2007 to July 31, 2008. The awards ceremony was held in December 2008, with the following 14 activities recognized.

Toshiba Dreams and Ideas Contest
Himeji Operations

To encourage interest in science among local elementary school students, every year students are asked to submit original inventions that run on batteries or use electrical parts as well as environmental posters. This contest has started 15 years ago. This year 1,322 students submitted their inventions and 240 students submiteed posters.

Support for social welfare activities in the local community
Keihin Operations

Toshiba Group Union and Toshiba joined hands to contribute to the activities that support handicapped people in the community for over ten years. Annual events such as New Year's Mochi Cooking Festival and the Tangerine piciking evcent is held. Some employees participate to support swimming lessons for the mentally challenged children every other week.

Shizuoka “Supporter for the Future of Forests”
Toshiba Carrier

The company signed the “Supporter for the Future of Forests” agreement with Shizuoka Prefecture and the Fuji City. For the five years until March 2012, the company will take care of the budget necessary to plant and to nourish the forest as well as make use of the forest by providing environmental education to Group employees. In March 2008, 166 employees and 91 of their families volunteered to plant a total of 3,0000 trees.

Promotion of safety campaign for elevators and escalators

The company has promoted safety campaign to demonstrate the correct way of using elevators and escalators. This campaign had started 30 years ago. The company created a DVD for children so that it will be easily understood. The DVD was chosen to be the designated video by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and was distributed to kindergartens across Japan. 15,106 DVDs have been distributed up to date.

New Graduate Hire Orientation Community Service Project

As part of their orientation program, new college graduates hired at Westinghouse participate in a community service activity. For three of the past 10 years this activity has supported ASSET Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the teaching and learning process with a focus on science and technology education. The most recent Westinghouse service project at ASSET occurred June 18, 2008, when 175 employees in the orientation program assembled science modules for educators to use in their classrooms. The activity demonstrated Westinghouse’s support for science education, and also helped employees to build friendships with their new colleagues.

Support to St. Joseph's Villa
Toshiba Business Solutions New York

To help enrich the lives of at-risk youth, TBSNY employees partnered with non-profit client St. Joseph's Villa in Rochester, NY. With technology as a theme, they created and installed a multi-media room for educational and entertainment purposes. Items donated by TBSNY, and then installed by employees, included a projector, screen, computer, video camera, and editing software. Some employees then donated time teaching students how to make their own movies, and others donated DVDs for a school media library. To thank the group, students prepared and served a meal to the TBSNY team. In addition, employees adopted a family during the holidays and purchased gifts and food for two teenage children and their single mom.

Building of Relaxation Garden for “Heilpaedagogisches Zentrum, Krefeld”

On 12 March, SDD visited the HPZ Krefeld, an organization, which owns 10 workshops from laundries to print and packing shops, in order to offer employment and care for about 1.800 disabled people and to support their integration in society. As part of a 2-day teambuilding an outside leisure area including paths, a robust wooden swing, benches and a herbal garden was being built by our employees, which have been prepared for this task during a learning-session the day before. HPZ was chosen to say thank you for the good co-operation when HPZ was doing the customization for SDD.

Two sponsored walks raising funds for Breast Cancer Care. The first walk (Walk the Walk) was 20 km from Goodwood Racecourse over the magnificent South Downs, in Sussex. The second walk (Ribbon Walk) was 32 km. It started and finished in the magnificent estate of England’s largest stately home, Blenheim Palace, which is also a world heritage site. It took in woodlands, rivers and picturesque villages. £650 was raised by our walkers for Breast Cancer Care.

A Special Gift to the Special Children

Part 1: Chritmas Party: Christmas is a very important season being celebrated generously and in much anticipation across the Philippines. For Filipino children belonging to the marginalized sector of society, the spirit of Christmas is not very much felt because of the lack of monetary resources to celebrate it. More so to children who have learning, intellectual, behavioral and emotional disabilities or commonly called "Special Children". With this project, the CSR Team endeavors to help the SPED students feel the real essence of Christmas despite their physical and mental condition.
Part 2: Livelihood from Scrap: Part of the gift to the children is to teach new skill which they can eventually use to earn a living or for their families. They were taught how to make tissue holder. Previous projects were pillow-making nad bag-making. Environmental awareness was also part of the activity wherein the children were taught of proper segregation.

Clean-up initiative
Hangzhi Machinery & Electronics Co., Ltd.

Since 2004, employees have been participating in the clean-up initiative around the West Lake. Ocver 1,060 employees and their families joined to support this activity over period of 8 times. 380 employees and 20 of their families participated this year. The increase in number of employees shows employees interest in contributing to the community.
