Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR JAPAN)
Programme Coordinator Mr. Takehiro Hozumi

Two of our members arrived in western Sumatra six days after the earthquake. They urgently investigated the needs in the area and decided to bring aid to the 565 families with disabled children who were students of the ten special schools in Padang City. The relief goods distributed to them included rice, water, canned food, instant noodles and candles. The staff received the words of gratitude from the families, saying that they were the “first NGO who came to help.”

We went to Lima Koto Timur district, Padang Pariaman region, which is about a 2-hour drive north of Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra Province. This area was claimed to be the most damaged by the disaster. We visited ten villages in the area, and distributed a set of 19 DIY tools to approximately 1,500 homes. It should be useful until their lives go back to normal, for removing the rubble of buildings and for building temporary shelters.

Support for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana

For the victims of the Typhoon Ketsana on September 27, 2009, Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines) and Toshiba Storage Device (Philippines) donated a total of approximately 4 million yen to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. Doctors and nurses were dispatched from our in-house clinic to a local evacuation center, and provided medical checks for free. Employees also donated cash contributions and relief goods for the victims of the typhoon.
