Use of Wood from Thinning

Past CSR efforts have included a comprehensive agreement between the Toshiba Group and Aomori Prefecture to collaborate in local forest development, signed in May 2009, and subsequent agreements have brought the town of Shichinohe and the city of Misawa into this collaboration for Aomori forest development.
A highlight of this program is using the Forest Neighborhood Association system*1 of an environmental nonprofit to have paper manufacturers accept wood from tree thinning in Misawa to make paper, which is ultimately used for Toshiba printing and copying needs. In these ways, the Toshiba Group continues to promote sustainability and recycling in society*2 not only through thinning but also by using products made from thinning.

*1:A new approach to forest thinning coordinated by the environmental nonprofit Office Chonai-kai that links forests with corporate consumers of forest products to create sustainable cycles of thinning and consumption of thinned wood.
*2:The ideal society envisioned generates less waste and actively recycles to reduce consumption of natural resources and environmental impact as much as possible.
