Contributions to the local community by nursing staff
Seeking to increase awareness of its services among local people, we have set up a health consultation section in the lobby of the Ito-Yokado store near JR Oimachi Station once a year on International Nurses Day (May 12) (since fiscal 2009, this has been increased to twice per year, in spring and fall). Every time the event is held, 10 public health nurses and nurses see around 200 people, offering blood pressure tests, obesity measurements, simple visceral fat measurements, and health consultations dealing with matters such as diet and exercise. Many visitors attend the event every year. Hospital staff also participated in the local summer festival “Oi Festa” and “Oi Dontaku” or city sports meets and served as emergency medical staff at events, publicizing the Toshiba General Hospital by means of the red Toshiba logos on their shirts.

Lectures for local residents- Seeking to become closer to the local community, the Toshiba General Hospital holds public lectures four times a year to teach local residents about the human body and diseases.

Contribution in support and research (2009)- We contributed 1.5 million yen in research funds to the Yokohama National University Faculty of Engineering.
Aid activities for developing countries in Asia- Since 2001, we have been donating 300,000 yen every year to PH-Japan, an NPO committed to health and medical support, to help provide medical equipment to developing Asian countries.

PET bottle cap collection drive- We collect and sells PET bottle caps and donates the funds to be used to provide vaccines to children all over the world.
Opening of gymnasium to local residents- Since 2003, we have opened its gymnasium every Friday for practice sessions by a local futsal team.
Blood drives (Letters of thanks)- On November 25, 2006, we received letters of thanks from the Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture and the Kanagawa Branch of the Japan Red cross Society honoring the company's efforts in blood donation drives since 1972. Since that year 16,500 people have given blood.
Clean-up around the company's facility
Executives and members of the voluntary promotion committee of each of our departments conducted a clean-up of the public bus stop in front of the company's facility. Employee volunteers clean up the area from the nearest train station to the bus stop once every six months, and this volunteer activity has now been conducted more than 50 times.
Collection drives of used prepaid cards and tickets and unused stamps- A volunteer activity promotion committee is formed, and employees are requested to collect used prepaid cards and tickets and unused stamps.

Release of carp fry by the “Group for the Protection of the Natural Environment of the Niino and Osa Rivers” (2010)- We teach kindergarten children about the importance of nature using methods including picture-story shows, and releases carp fry into the Niino and Osa Rivers.

Participation in volunteer tree-planting activities (2007-)- Responding to an appeal from Omaezaki City, our employees participate in tree-planting activities to restore a disaster-prevention forest along the coastline which had suffered insect damage.

Illuminated decorations at Head Office / Call for designs
Every year we bring pleasure to local people by decorating the fences along its main gate with illuminations.
Since fiscal 2005, we have asked local elementary school students to submit designs for its year-end and new year illuminations.
In 2006, 290 children from three schools submitted designs, and three of these designs were selected to be turned into illuminations. 15 designs were also selected as runners-up, and the prizewinning children and their families were invited to a combined awards and lighting ceremony.
In 2007, about 200 students from three schools submitted designs, of which three were chosen for use in illuminations.
In 2008, about 220 students from three schools submitted designs, and three of these designs were used in illuminations.
In 2009, about 220 students from three schools submitted designs. The students who submitted the prizewinning designs were awarded prizes, and were invited to attend the lighting ceremony with their families.
Work experience for junior high school students- We offer local junior high school students practical experience of inspection procedures over a two-day period to assist them in making career choices.
Guided tours for local elementary school students and members of various local organizations
Participation in LED engineering class on the “Day of Light” (2010)- We conducted an engineering class at an elementary school in Imabari City, Aichi Prefecture, at which employees explained LEDs to children and gave them guidance and instruction in making objects using LEDs.
In-house awards system to promote activities that contribute to society- Seeking to promote participation by its employees in voluntary initiatives that contribute to society, in fiscal 2005 we established the Harison Toshiba Social Contribution Award, which is granted to employees conducting volunteer activities. The award celebrates employees whose activities in contributing to their local communities provide an example to their colleagues. Following a survey of employees' involvement in activities that contribute to society, two individuals are chosen on the basis of factors such as outstanding enterprise, continuity, and degree of contribution.
In 2006, the award was granted to an employee who had provided instruction in kendo to local children for about 32 years, and an employee who had served as an official basketball referee for about 22 years.
In fiscal 2007, the award was granted to an employee who had coached local children in basketball for about 18 years, and an employee who had served as a judo instructor in France for about 25 years.
In fiscal 2008, the award was received by an employee who had acted as a referee for high school and little league baseball games for about 18 years, and an employee who had contributed to containing and extinguishing a fire on Mt. Kasamatsu in August 2008 as a member of the local firefighting team.
In fiscal 2009, the award was granted to an employee who had provided support for the residents of a home for the disabled for about 11 years, and an employee who had coached local children in basketball for about 12 years.
Participation and cooperation in the regional industry promotion event “Bari Bari Monozukuri Festa”
We display products and supplies a variety of equipment used in experiments (cold cathode discharge lamps, LED products, etc.) for this event, which is designed to promote an interest in manufacturing through displays and hands-on experience. Company engineers also act as instructors in a “Let's Create Something Interesting” class, teaching local children about the relationship between the wavelength of light and color under the title “The Story of Light and Color.”
In 2008, instructors conducted simple experiments to demonstrate the effect of CO2 in increasing temperature and the contamination of water, giving children the opportunity to directly learn about common environmental problems.
In 2009, about 220 students from three schools submitted designs. The students who submitted the prizewinning designs were awarded prizes, and were invited to attend the lighting ceremony with their families.
Energy-saving education for junior high school students- We cooperated with a local junior high school which is learning about company energy-saving activities. Four students were invited to the company's plant to learn about its energy-saving measures and energy management system, and were also offered a lecture on energy-saving activities they could participate in, such as turning light off during lunch breaks and adjusting air conditioner settings.

Hosting of sales event by social welfare organizations
We host sales events conducted by the social welfare organizations Pastel Farm and Olive House and the NPO Okashiya Palette once every two months. At these events, employees purchase products made by people with intellectual disabilities, and the proceeds of the sales helps to provide for their support. Commenced in 2004, as of fiscal 2009 the events had raised a cumulative total of 1.9 million yen.
Design classes (2007-)
Toshiba Design Center holds design classes to enable children to experience the joy of creation. Every year, Center employees participate in the summer course held by the Shibaura Elementary School in Tokyo's Minato Ward, with this year's theme being the design of packaging for home electronic appliances. Employees also participated in an experience-based social studies event organized by Minato Ward. The children who attend the classes draw sketches (the basis of design) and produce a variety of ideas to complete their specific products, all the while receiving advice from Toshiba designers, giving them the opportunity to experience how real designing is done.

Donation of umbrellas to volunteer organization (2007)- Ownerless umbrellas were collected at the Toshiba Headquarters Building and donated 91 umbrellas to the volunteer organization “WE 21 Japan” to be provided to people in need in the Asian region.

Contributions from employees- We collect contributions from employees twice a year when bonuses are paid. The company donates PCs to child welfare facilities, and the like.

Toshiba Dreams and Ideas Contest
Seeking to promote interest in science and technology among local elementary school students, every year the company calls for ideas for inventions from local schools (objects that run on batteries or use electrical components), and awards prizes to the best inventions.
Try Week active learning program for junior high school students- We commenced this program in 1998. This year, seven students gained experience of aspects of the company including security duties and product packaging.
Participation in Hyogo Prefecture Business Forest project (2008-)- We support the goals of Hyogo Prefecture's “Business Forest” project. The company has signed an agreement to maintain an area of approximately 36 hectares of forest owned by Shiso City for a period of five years. A tree was planted to commemorate the signing of the agreement.
Exhibition in Himeji Eco Festival 2009- We mounted a display providing details of its environmental protection initiatives in the festival venue.
Holding of “Let's Play with Electricity” classes (2007)- Participating in an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology which seeks to promote intellectual curiosity towards science and foster a scientific perspective and way of thinking among elementary school students, company employees and their families offered students a class called “Let's Play with Electricity.” This class enabled the students to learn about electricity by experiencing conductive and non-conductive objects.
Holding of Toshiba Cup Ball Game Tournament- We hold ball game tournaments for children attending local elementary schools and their families in order to promote interaction with the local community.

Volunteering for snow shoveling for elderly households
Since 2005, employees have volunteered to shovel snow at the households of elderly residents of Sapporo. The words of thanks from the elderly citizens warm the hearts of all participants.
In 2007, employees spent two days clearing snow from walkways, roofs, entrances, and other areas of 18 elderly households. This was a warm winter, but some areas experienced a considerable buildup of snow. 93 employees of Toshiba and Group companies were involved, each sporting a cap emblazoned with the Toshiba logo.
In 2008, employees spent two days clearing snow from walkways, roofs, entrances, and other areas of 15 elderly households. 125 employees of Toshiba and Toshiba Group companies braved snowstorms to perform their tasks, and their efforts were much appreciated by the elderly residents.
In 2009, employees spent two days clearing snow from walkways, roofs, entrances, and other areas of 22 elderly households. 130 employees of Toshiba, Toshiba Group companies and business partners worked hard in the blowing snow, receiving warm thanks from all those that they helped.
In 2010, employees spent two days clearing snow from walkways, roofs, entrances, and other areas of 25 elderly households. This year, a large number of households requested help in shoveling snow, and 135 employees of Toshiba, Group companies and business partners put in hard work, winning the gratitude of the elderly residents they helped.

This year, there were heavy snows, and 138 employees of Toshiba, Group companies and business partners put in hard work, winning the gratitude of the elderly residents they helped.
Participation by employees as assistants at the Sapporo Snow Festival
Since 2005, company employees have volunteered to help escort elderly and disabled visitors and to assist visitors in wheelchairs during the four-day Sapporo Snow Festival.

Participation in clean-ups of beach and sea (2006-)
Since 2006, employees of Toshiba Group companies and business partners have participated in clean-up events organized jointly by volunteer groups including the “Clean up the beach and the sea organization.”
In 2007 185 volunteers, in 2008 214 volunteers, and in 2010 227 volunteers took part in a clean-up of the Ishikari Shinko Hama beach.
Holding of “Handmade Battery Workshop” (2008)
We held a “Handmade Battery Workshop” in collaboration with the Sapporo Consumer Center, at which 50 participants (24 groups of parents and children) attempted to make batteries. Employee volunteers guided the participants in the use of tools. The participating children burst into applause when the finished batteries lit up light bulbs.

Unsent postcards collection drive- We have participated in the collection drive for postcards on which errors have been made organized by the Toyama UNESCO Association since 2007. Requesting the participation of the Hokuriku Toshiba Group (Toueikai and Business Partner Association), the company collects about 1,000 New Year's and other postcards.

Holding of environmental poster and slogan competition- Every year, we ask students of local elementary schools to submit posters and slogans dealing with environmental issues, and awards prizes to outstanding entries.
Ongoing certification as an Outstanding Enterprise in the Area of Waste Reduction of Asahikawa City- In 2008, we became the first company to be recognized as an Outstanding Enterprise in the Area of Waste Reduction (Gold Grade) by Asahikawa City, and the company was again certified Gold Grade after a follow-up review in 2010.
Donation to elementary school in Thai farming village (2009)
Together with employees of Toshiba Hokuto Electronics Devices (Thailand), our employees visited an elementary school in the economically disadvantaged Isaan region of Thailand, donating 13,000 baht (about 30,000 yen) and giving stationery and sweets to the children.
Sponsorship of the Kamikawa Shrine Festival
Participation in “Asahikawa flower-planting” initiative (2008-)- All the company's employees, both direct and indirect, participated in this event, which was held in June. Each department was allocated a flower bed in the area surrounding the company premises, and environmental staff considered the selection of flower varieties and the number to be ordered. The flower beds were maintained until mid-October, with employees watering them and performing other essential tasks on a daily basis.

Participation in social studies teaching and provision of guided tours for elementary, junior high and high school students- Assisting with the teaching of the social studies unit “The People behind Industrial Production,” we offer guided tours to 5th grade students of local elementary schools. We also send employees to the schools to act as teachers in classes relating to the visits, to answer any questions the students might have.
Toshiba Hokuto Summer Festival- This is an annual festival held to promote interaction between company employees and local people.
In fiscal 2010, our 60th anniversary, approximately 830 local people enjoyed a variety of events including a brass band performance by students of a local junior high school and a yosakoi dance.

Clean-up of area around company premises- Every May, employees stage a clean-up of the company parking area and the roads leading to the company premises, coinciding with a clean-up event organized by the local neighborhood association.
Traffic safety initiative for local elementary school students (2008)- We mounted a campaign to help protect elementary school students from traffic accidents, raising a total of 49,481 yen in funds. These funds were used to donate reflective seals and key holders to local elementary schools.

Changing of fluorescent lights and cleaning at special nursing home for the elderly by employee volunteers- Forty employees changed fluorescent lights and light bulbs and cleaned floors and washed windows at a special nursing home for the elderly. Funds for the purchase of the replacement light fittings were contributed by donations from all the company's employees.
Guided tours for high school students (2008)
Students of the Niigata Muramatsu High School were given guided tours. The students were guided around the company's environmental facilities and given simple explanations of its environmental initiatives.
Clean-up around company facility- Our employees pick up trash and clean mud from drains in the area around the company's facility in order to maintain harmonious relations with the local community.

Responding to a request from the company for used articles, employees collect calendars, datebooks, postcards, prepaid cards and used stamps. These are donated to the Social Welfare Council of Kamo City. About 20,000 PET bottle caps were also donated to the NPO Ecocap Movement.

Social studies program for elementary and junior high school students in rural areas
Every year since 1990, we have been lending our support to social studies programs at local elementary schools in Tsushima town, Uwajima city, Ehime prefecture, by inviting their students to tour our plant and observe the manufacturing process of small light bulbs. In 2000, we also began offering a three-day work experience program to junior high school students, to provide hands-on experience in manufacturing small light bulbs. In 2010, 106 elementary school students and four junior high school students took part in these programs. In a rural town with a population of roughly 12,000, the steady efforts of our small company of approximately 100 employees have become an integral part of the local community.

Tanzawa clean-up mountain climbing
At the suggestion of our chairman, a group mainly composed of employees and retirees from Toshiba and affiliated companies climb the Tanzawa Mountains once or twice a year to collect empty cans, bottles and paper trash along the hiking trails. We have been continuing this activity since 2002.

Work experience program for university students
Project for promoting employment creation in Kawasaki city (planning, operation and provision of instructors for an IT engineer training course)- At the request of the Kanagawa Information Services Industry Association, we have been cooperating in creating the course curriculum for an IT engineer training course since 2006, as well as in managing the course and providing lectures.
Clean-up around the head office- Three times a year, we collect rubbish littering the sidewalks and roadside verges near our head office.
Head office lights-out campaign (participation in Candle Light in Kawasaki) (2008)- In a show of approval with the Candle Light in Kawasaki lights-out event promoted by Kawasaki city, we turned out all the lights at our Head Office building on the night of July 7, to coincide with the day of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, which focused on global warming prevention.
Participation in the Mt. Fuji Cleanup Project (2007-)- We participated in the Mt. Fuji Cleanup Project sponsored by Nihon Purple Corporation by helping to make the rubbish bags that are used in the project and collecting and sorting rubbish while calling on hikers' cooperation in collecting rubbish.

Promotion of Pink Ribbon Campaign- We hold seminars for Toshiba and Toshiba Group employees which highlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
Holding of safe driving workshops- Aiming to increase safety awareness and reduce traffic accidents among Toshiba Group employees, these workshops have been held continuously since 1990, with more than 1,800 having now been held.

Development of disaster prevention experts- We support employees who wish to acquire certification as an expert in saving lives in emergency situations, known as disaster prevention experts.
Cooperation in organizing an exchange retreat for Japanese and Korean high school students (2008)- We provided computers and a network environment to an event hosted by the Japan-Korea Economic Association. The event brought together outstanding Japanese and Korean high school students who have the potential to become future leaders in their country, and promoted exchanges by dividing them into mixed teams and having each team create and present a business project related to Japan and Korea.

Pet bottle cap collection drive- We launched a collection drive for PET bottle caps in 2010, and have since collected and donated enough caps to fund vaccines for 81.6 children in developing countries.
Installation of charity vending machines- We donated 237,802 yen from the sales from charity vending machines installed in our offices to the NPO Ashinaga, toward funding scholarships and providing financial support to children who have lost their parents due to illness, accident or disaster.

Donation of unneeded calendars (2008-)- We collect and donate unneeded calendars to preschools in Fuchu city, so children can use the reverse sides as drawing paper.

Clean Osaka 2010 campaign- We engage in litter clean-ups in our community through participation in the Clean Osaka campaign hosted by Osaka city.
PET bottle cap collection drive- In fiscal 2009, we collected 256,589 plastic bottle caps corresponding to vaccines for 139.7 children and a reduction of 1,149.4 kg of CO2 emissions.

Volunteer clean-up activities
We have been volunteering in litter clean-up activities since 1993 as part of our annual Environment Month campaign held every June. In 2007, as many as 150 employees and 50 family members spent the morning hours on a weekend collecting 90 kg of litter along an 18.3 km stretch of road that runs in front of the train station, police department, and city office.

We received the Environment Grand Prize from Southern Iwate Regional Development Bureau in recognition of our initiatives to prevent global warming, conserve energy, reduce waste, promote recycling, and fulfill our corporate social responsibility.
First tree-planting event for the “Planting 1.5 Million Trees” project
We entered a general agreement for forest development with Iwate prefecture in 2009. In October 2009, our employees and their families volunteered their time to do the first tree-planting. In October 2010, 181 employees met for the second planting.
Participation in Iwate Environmental Kingdom Exhibition- We have co-sponsored and participated in Iwate Environmental Kingdom Exhibition since 2009.
Corporate Achievement Award awarded from Kitakami city in recognition of our community contribution activities (2011)
We received a Corporate Achievement Award from Kitakami city in recognition of the environmental reporting meetings we have been holding with local residents since 2005, the joint farmers' market project we have launched with Norakura Club this year, and our cooperation in providing lecturers and workshops at events hosted by other organizations.
Basic course on semiconductors (2010)
We provided the venue for implementation of a basic course on semiconductors sponsored by Iwate Semiconductor and Electronics Industries Promotion Conference (I-SEP). The course was designed to develop human resources for semiconductor-related industries, and was attended by 20 specialists from in and outside of Iwate. They deepened their knowledge of semiconductors through detailed introduction of the manufacturing process and quality of semiconductors and a tour of the plant.
Giving a visiting lecture at a local high school (2009)- At the request of the Southern Iwate Regional Development Bureau's Department of Manufacturing Personnel Development, our administrations manager gave a lecture at a local industrial high school. The students listened attentively to the lecture, which expressed society's large expectations of them as they prepare to enter the real world.
Fundraising for the “Planting 1.5 Million Trees” project (2008)- Our employees raised and donated 127,310 yen to our hometown Kitakami city, toward planting trees as part of the Kitakami Station East Exit Renovation Project.
Use of our parking lot for farmers' markets- Every Wednesday, we provide the use of our parking lot as a venue for local farmers' markets.
Volunteer nursing care at nursing homes- Every year since 1996, our employees and their families have been volunteering their time at nursing homes, helping exchange linen, wipe windows, and performing other such basic tasks.
Plant tours for interaction with the local community- We provide tours of our plant to elementary and junior high school students, business missions from overseas and other groups.

We receive interns from local universities and high schools, and provide general knowledge of semiconductors through lectures and hands-on training in the semiconductor manufacturing process. In fiscal 2010, we provided an internship to three students from Iwate University and five students from Kurosawajiri Technical High School.
Letter of appreciation for our traffic safety initiatives (2007)- We have established an expert committee on traffic safety and launched other initiatives to contribute to promoting traffic safety in the community. In recognition of our efforts to prevent general accidents and emergencies during commutes, we received a letter of appreciation from the Kitakami police department.
Cooperation in community events- We cooperate in organizing national singing competitions held in the community and festivals that contribute to the preservation of local performing arts.
Blood drives- We participate in blood drives twice a year. In fiscal 2010, we received a letter of appreciation from the Kitakami Blood Donation Promotion Council in recognition of our continuous cooperation in blood donation activities.
