Social Contributions Activities Overseas[North & South America]
We have been committed to support the Ocean Institute since 1997 starting with sponsoring of Tallships Festival. TABS employees have volunteered their time to help many of Ocean Institute's educational programs such as Adapt-A-Class and their fundraising programs such as Build A Boat Challenge and other such events. We have launched fundraising events, setting our goal to raise 100,000 US dollars for the Great Strides Walk in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We have adopted an ambassador, a 5th grader who has Cystic Fibrosis, sending messages to educate our employees about Cystic Fibrosis. Over 700 employees raised 133,000 US dollars in total. Together with Toshiba America Information Systems, we suponsored a Toshiba house at the San Juan Capistrano site. Corporate Build Days are held where both companies' employees worked together to build simple homes. Since 2007, philanthropy session was held and children prepared artrwork for a TABS Calendar. The calendars were sold to parents, family members, friends and business partners and the proceeds went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the local Orangewood Children's home. TABS Marketing had an excess of out dated or odds and ends of promo items. The TABS Fun Bunch organized an employee sale and 100% of the proceeds from the sale was donated to the Orange County Register Campership Fund. The sale raised over 5,000 US dollars enough to send 35 kids to Summer camp.
In December TABS sponsored 8 military families of deployed soldiers through Operation Homefront. Employees'contribution and matching funds from TABS, transportation for the families to and from Camp Pendleton was provided and furthermore 200 US dollars in gifts for each child as well as 100 US dollars gift cards were given to mothers. TABS Santa read the story "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to the children. Fund raising efforts were coordinated to raise funds to help the victims of the tragic disasters. In addition, employees made personal donations of food, clothing, lanterns, tarps and many more to those affected by the Hurricane Wilma. Over 35,000 dollars in total were contributed to the relief efforts from TABS and its employees. TABS in cooperation with Books R Fun held an annual Book Fair. TABS employees purchased books, and 10% of the proceeds were donated to Toys for Tots, which distributes toys to underprivileged children. In an arrangement with the Los Angeles Angels baseball team, for every triple hit by Angel's player in Angel Stadium, the company donates a printer to Title 1 Schools in Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Orange and Anaheim School districts. Through Daffodil Days Campaign at TABS, employees can purchase flowers to support the activities of the American Cancer Society.
Toshiba Bussiness Solutions New York office made donation of notebook computers and projectors for the media room at St. Joseph's Villa, an institution supporting youth who have been victims of abuse at home. Employees helped students to work the machines. Employees of Toshiba Business Solutions New York office were each in charge of a bowling lane with 4-6 children bowling. It was important to encourage and praise the bowlers without coaching them on how-to bowl. Toshiba Business Solutions New York office employees, moved by a local news story, mobilized to help collect needed items for women and their children. They and their families and friends, collected more than 12 laundry baskets full of supplies such as diapers, school supplies, new sneakers, warm coats, etc. When setting up or repairing a copier in-house, test copies are made. Toshiba Business Solutions New York office copies pictures that can be colored in by children and they are donated to the children's wing of the local hospital. The nurses who work on the floor, and the families who are there with sick children always seem to appreciate this small gesture. A contest to decorate a Christmas tree with 25 US dollars worth of canned goods was held and employees voted on their favorite trees. Canned goods were then donated to a local food shelf. Employees volunteered at a fundraiser held by SOS Children's Villages Florida, an organization that raises and educates children who can't live with their parents. Started after World War II, SOS Children's Villages currently cares for 62,000 abandoned or abused children, with the Florida branch caring for 66. This year's fundraising event raised 625,000 dollars. The company raised 100,000 dollars at this event for Women in Distress, an NPO that supports victims of domestic violence in Broward County. In addition to monetary support, the company provides the organization with printed materials.
Employees purachase holiday gifts for local children from financially struggling families. Once the gifts were gathered, they were picked up by the Center for Family Resources to arrange for their distribution to the children. In 2006 gifts were donated to 65 children. Employees donated non-perishable food to be delivered to those in need. Participating employees donated a pint of blood each for the onsite blood drive.
Activities Committee at TACP held an “International Food Day.” Employees were asked to donate an ethnic dish or make a monetary donation. Thirty-four employees brought in a dish among them included sushi. Employees donated a total of 222 US dollars and company added to make a total donation of 450 US dollars to a local food pantry. This program is designed to expose girls and boys to work environment. They learn about various aspects of business, such as sales, advertising and job interviews. Manufacturing Division of TACP in Tennessee (TNP) donated a portion of its property for the relocation of a fire station. Helped to provide the community a better emergency service. Since 1993, the company makes an annual contribution of 40,000 dollars to fund scholarships to the dependent children to Toshiba employees. A picnic was held by the Activities Committee for all employees to attend. There were several games that employees could donate a dollar to play, including fish bean bag toss, etc. The company matched what the employees contributed and together were donated to the local Red Cross. TNP received the Iris Award from Japan-America Society of Tennessee for its visionary contribution to the Japanese-Tennessee relationship over the years. The company organized a blood drive to support a family member of an employee who was injured by an attack from a shark when swimming. Employees also made cash contributions to help the family. Cooperated with the local fire station through giving fire preparedness training and donating coloring books to local schools. This activity received the Community Service Award 2005 from the fire station. The company provided support to fund raising activities for the purchase of books to maintain the library in the neighborhood. Tennessee operations implemented a program to encourage employees to reduce practices that are wasteful to the environment and the community. This was emphasized through the term "Mottainai." The company invites guest speakers to give encouraging lectures on the importance of reduced energy consumption, recycling and environmental protection in daily life, whether at home or at work.
At the Buffalo Grove office, company and employee donations have been used to buy coats, boots, clothing and toys for underprivileged families in Chicago since 2000. This year a Christmas party was held for 15 underprivileged families with children under 10 years old. The children sat on Santa's lap, were given presents and enjoyed Christmas dinner.
Employee volunteers and their families and friends have raised money for Boston's local public broadcasting station since 1996. The 1,450 dollars raised in 2006 will go directly to the station's education fund and be spent on programming areas such as culture, history, industry, the arts, science and information. The environmental and travel committees' proposal to reduce the size of car rentals by one grade was adopted in 2006, resulting in a 1,674 dollars reduction in the cost of fuel used over a three-month period-or the equivalent of 15.18 tons of CO2. This equates to a yearly reduction of 60.72 tons of carbon. Gives financial contributions to FSEA. Children can learn the fun of science through hand-on projects they offer. Newly established "Disaster Relief Leave of Absence" program encourages employees to assist with a relief effort during times of a U.S. National Disaster. One of the employees went to New Orleans to assist in relief operations. The Federation for Indo-Americans of North California, Nisei Week Japanese Festival, Orange Coast Gakuen, Love without Boundaries, Spartan Classic, Angel Adventure Walk, Libertyville High School 5K Red Ribbon, Marlborough Scholarship Fund, Comedy Night, Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament, Libertyville Summer Adult Softball League, CORA:Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse, Best Teacher Award Ceremony, Bathgate Elementary School's "Jogging for Technology," Hopedale Youth Charity Golf Tournament, Ultimate Golf Challenge, Corona Del Mar Baseball Team, Elementary Learning Foundation, Bonita Canyon Elementary School Music Program, Bonita Canyon Elementary School PTA, Future Scientists and Engineers of America Has banded with Phones 4 Life, Inc., a non-profit organization that collects used and un-used cellular phones, refurbishes them and redistributes them to the elderly. The phones are preprogrammed with emergency numbers providing them with an added sense of security. Provided support for Saratoga High School, which was going to participate in a robotics competition hosted by FIRST, an NPO that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. The Build-A-Boat challenge is an event in which participants design, build and race their own boats. TAEC and other Group companies based in Orange County participated in this event. The company set up an online system for employees to be able to make a donation to the American Red Cross. The company makes the same amount of contribution as the total of the employees' donation. Worked with the American Red Cross to develop a system where the employee can go on-line and contribute to the Katrina relief effort. TAEC and the employees contributed over 16,000,000 dollars. An employee devotes her time by volunteering in the studio of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), a nonprofit volunteering organization, to record books for people with disabilities such as visual impairment or dyslexia. Since 2005, the volunteer fair is organized to promote employees' participation in volunteering activities in the community. In 2006, 23 non-profit organizations set up their booth to give information on volunteer related activities to 80 employees attending the fair. Employees are encouraged to engage in activities which help the community they live in. At the same time, employees were asked to give contributions of items such as sanitary materials for hospitals and other facilities. A program that enables employees to take leaves of absence to do volunteer work was implemented in 2006. Every year, some employees took advantage of the program and participated in a total of 150 hours of volunteer work. Established with the help of the World Innovation Forum and Orange County Innovation, this award recognizes and encourages environmental innovation in Orange County. In 2006, Renée Mauborgne, co-author of Blue Ocean Strategy, was a guest speaker at the award ceremony.
The Toshiba Classic is the most charitable event on the PGA Champions Tour. The tournament has raised over 12 million US dollars for many charities. The tournament sponsors Toshiba Classic Scholarship Fund. Twelve finalists received Toshiba laptop computers and in addition two winners received 10,000 US dollars in scholarship. In the 10th year of the program, the Toshiba Classic Scholarship Fund will have donated a total of 189,000 US dollars in scholarships and 110 computers to outstanding students. In 2008, Toshiba Classic “Shot from the Top” involved 30 high school golf athletes from 15 schools taking a chance to win up to 25 Toshiba notebook computers for their schools. An employee has become a member of the local Orange County Business Council, and actively works to solve challenges that the region is facing. An employee is a member of the Board of Directors of the Vocational Visions, a non-profit organization which provides vocational and life skills training and support services to people with developmental disabilities, and contributes to the activities of the organization. Participates in many fund-raising and other community events throughout the year. TAIS created a pantry by recycling an old TV wall unit that was used in a demo office. 754 pounds of food has been collected over a year and 250 US dollars was collected from an employee raffle. The funds were donated to South County Outreach with two boxes and four bags of children's books collected. TAIS held a silent auction and “Denim Day” fundraiser by asking partnering vendors to donate an item that employees bid on. A total of 2,517 US dollars was raised and donated to The Smile Train so that ten children in underdeveloped countries could receive cleft palate surgery.
Provided support to organize a recycling event, which was held as part of the Earth Day activities. Many employees volunteered to assist guiding vehicles that brought recycling items to the venue. Guest speakers at the forum included such renowned individuals as Clayton Christensen, Renée Mauborgne and Ray Kurzweil. Approximately 500 administrators attended the two-day event. The WIF aims to turn Orange County into a center of innovation-a goal Toshiba shares. 308 PCs and cash contributions were made to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Children of employees also participated in this initiative by doing car wash to raise 320 dollars.
Forging an on-going partnership with Orange County Social Services, TAMS and ACT Committee have continued to assist neediest children by using proceeds from the annual charity auction organized every year since 1986. With those proceeds, ACT shops, wraps, and delivers clothing, food and toys to families. Auction held in Oct. 2005 raised over $15,000. A grand total of over $150,000 has been raised throughout the last 20 years, helping over 450 families and 1,053 children. Not just the holiday season, ACT has expanded its program to respond to special needs throughout the entire year. To help raise money for the American Cancer Society the ACT committee sold daffodils to TAMS employees. In 2008, more than 1,755 US dollars was raised and donated to help find a cure for cancer. The ACT committee auctioned off a gift basket to raise money for the OC Rescue Mission. In 2008, everyone at TAMS participated raising 1,050 US dollars. This money will go to help further the work of the rescue mission. The ACT committee raffled off gift baskets at Valentine's and Easter to raise money for Orange County Social Services. This group takes care of foster children who do not have families they can go home to. The Valentine's basket raised 1,315 US dollars and the Easter basket raised 1,035 US dollars. A grand total of 2,350 US dollars was donated to Orange County Social Services this past year. Toshiba developed the grant program with AHRA (The Association for Medical Imaging Management) and seeks to improve patient care and safety in diagnostic imaging through offering grants to fund programs, trainings and seminars at local hospitals. Selected by the AHRA selection committee, three medical centers and hospitals received 7,500 US dollars grants. The employees were asked to crochet blankets and booties and hats for newborns who's families have nothing and need everything including warm clothes for the children to wear.
Employees volunteered to assist in providing water and first aid to participants at rest stops. In addition, employees made contributions over 50,000 dollars to this event over the past five years. One public school in a needed area around Mexico City is chosen, and the company have been providing support in various forms. Major contributions include painting of the school building, donation of notebook computers, projectors, and televisions, as well as giving education to the parents.
This program has been in operation for over 5 years. TDM supports both school facilities and a mobile education truck, which is equipped with 35-40 notebook computers and a satellite link. There is an annual golf event fundraiser, TOSHIBA UNETE GOLF EVENT. Players' golf fees are donated, and there is an auction of Toshiba products. About 250,000 US dollars was raised at the last event, benefiting 5,000 students from 10 schools.
Employees provided community services to create cleaner neighborhood. Ten employees volunteered at an elementary school where damage of the facilities were intese. The company donated necessary materials to resotre the damged areas. Employees also volunteered in the rehabilitation of the public park. They cleaned and painted the park for 3 days. Works with the local university to provide medical services to the community, such as dental care, eye exams, health checks, etc.
This is a program held throughout the year to think about "moral values, such as harmony and respect in the family." In recent years, many youths have been grappling with problems such as the breakdown of the family, drug and alcohol abuse. Participants in this program can contribute to maintaining healthy and sound communities by passing along the lessons learned in the program to their families and neighbors. As part of an ongoing effort that stretches back five years, the company regularly donates proceeds from the sale of scrap parts to the institute. Toshiba and United Way initiated a "Clean up the world" program to rehabilitate a park in the neighborhood. Employees and residents volunteered to paint the playing area, sidewalks, and cleaned the premises.
Made donation of 2,000 US dollars to the INTEGRA Foundation an institution providing services and therapy for disabled patients. Supports IMPULSA with an annual donation of 4,000 US dollars to support their program to help economically challenged children. About 1,000 employees participated in this program to give personal comtributions deducted from their monthly salaries to charity. This year, 13,120 dollars were contributed and decided by the employee committee to purchase and distribute blankets, food, etc., to a center for mentally challenged people through the United Way.
Provided critical materials to help victims of the hurricane that hit Mexico and the storm that affected Juarez City.
Some 68 blankets were donated to the Tarahumara people of Chihuahua to help them face extremely harsh winter conditions. The employees actively participated in the collection of gifts, food and personal items for those in need. Company wide informational flyers were sent to all California employees notifying them of the intent and purpose of event. Harison Toshiba Lighting USA started a "Green" initiative; encouraging carpooling and reducing energy consumption by using energy efficient lighting and reducing lighting by 50% in low utilization areas. Other measures have benn taken such as to reduce total energy consumption, to reduce total paper consumption. To encourage employees to cooperate with the blood donation, they are allowed to have breaks during office hours. The goal of this annual program is to clean up trash in local communities and give residents a chance to pitch in as well. The week begins with a home clean-up day, with hazardous trash and old electronics removed free of charge. Donated 500 US dollars to the American Red Cross. Employees raised 24,001 dollars to support charity organizations in the community.
TIC donated approximately 100 used cellular phones which were no longer of any use to its employees to a women's shelter in Houston. The phones could still be used to make emergency calls to 911. In the efforts to reduce facility waste, TIC offered unused and damaged wood otherwise going to a landfill to a company manufacturing organic gardening materials. Invited "Family 2 Family Network", an organization supporting people with disabilities, to the company to talk to the company's employees about their activities. TIC is involved in company-wide waste minimization efforts to reduce waste going to landfill, aiming for a greener environment.
Employees throughout the company contributed and gave food, clothes, money and other items of value to the victims. In addition, the company and employees contributed cash to the effort. TIC provides support to fund raising activities conducted by the Foundation to give scholarships to students seeking financial support for higher education. Twice per year TIC's Employee Relations Manager works with the local Bloodbank and our Environmental, Health and Safety Department to organize, publisize and execute a blood drive on our Houston, Texas location. Initiated by the CSR committee, this campaign collects winter clothes for the disadvantaged. The program, which is supported by other local business offices, donated 10 boxes of clothes this year. To raise employee awareness about resource conservation and recycling, the CSR committee initiated a recycling campaign. The recycled resources were donated to ADERE, a center for the mentally challenged in San Paulo. Twenty-three computers and two printers were donated to a social welfare organization through the Agente Cidadao, an organization that repairs and reassemble products to a usable condition. Supported the program by providing medical equipment to be used for the examination. Employees helped with maintenance and training of the operators. The proceeds from the semi-annual Charity sale were donated to several foundations and charity organizations.
Toshiba and Best Buy joined to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation with the launch of Toshiba's stylish pink Portégé M800 laptop. Part of its sales was contributed to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to help support relevant and innovative breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs.
TCL has been sponsoring the annual TOSHIBA "Breath of Life" Celebrity Ski Challenge race, a charity ski event held to help children with cystic fibrosis to fight the fatal disease. Sponsored the "KOL Safe Surfing Contest" aimed at increasing students' awareness of Internet safety in schools across Canada.
We launched a Chess Project with the São Paulo Chess Club, and the NGO UNAS in Heliópolis. The aim is to bring supplementary education, culture, discipline to the local children. We provided a class in the Heliópolis Community Center along with necessary equipment and material such as personal computers with a specific chess software, chess boards and pieces, score boards, etc.
We provided eye exam equipment and eyeglasses along with company staff to support the “Give the Gift of Sight” program by Luxottica which delivers free eye care.
The employees association (Toshiminas) collects donation from employees' monthly salary and makes contribution to a local school. We promoted a campaign to let employees donate winter clothes. Clothes were then given to City Hall to be distributed to the people in need.
What began as one employee's attempt to help an underprivileged family 19 years ago has grown into a company-wide initiative involving all 70 employees. Every year the company takes requests for presents from over 100 local underprivileged children 17 years of age and younger. Each request is written on an angel-shaped piece of paper and hung on the company Christmas tree. Each employee then selects an angel and buys the present. In return, employees are given a photo of the child. Many employees select the same child each year, allowing them to continue to brighten the child's holiday season year after year.
ASSET is an independent, nonprofit education reform initiative dedicated to continuously improve the teaching and learning process, with initial efforts in K-8 science and technology education. ASSET focuses on teaching methodology and science content that supports the use of 6,000 hands-on, standards-based science modules. New graduates from Westinghouse volunteered to assemble ASSET's science modules for educators to use in teaching science class to students in grades k-8. Since 2005, the Westinghouse Women in Nuclear organization has held a hands-on learning event designed to empower female students. In 2007, 35 employees and 70 students participated, with the students donning protective gear for a training exercise involving a nuclear reactor and other power generators. Female engineers gave lectures on radiation, machinery, material physicality and chemistry. There was also a panel discussion on engineering careers and college course selection.
The N-Vision Program, a biannual educational initiative that promotes a greater understanding of nuclear power, uses workshops to teach high school students about important topics that aren't found in the regular school curriculum. Examples include energy science, nuclear energy and how to plan a career in engineering. Approximately 20 company engineers volunteer for the workshops, each of which were attended by approximately 30 students.
About 80 employees volunteered to clean up and renovate Boy Scout Camp Guyasuta, a 168-acre facility in Sharpsburg, Pa. The volunteer effort was part of the company's annual United Way Day of Caring which the company has been participating for over 10 years. Volunteers worked in repairing trails in the woods, replenishing a fresh supply of campfire wood, painting and cleaning buildings, repairing roofs, winterizing the swimming pool and cleaning up litter.etc. The picnic tables were assembled and vinyl siding was put up, both donated by Westinghouse. About 30 employees painted Mars Home for Youth's Longmore Academy, a facility in Mars that provides alternative education for at-risk youth. |
