Social Contributions Activities Japan[A-C]
The collected stamps and prepaid cards are sent to the Toshiba Social Contributions Office once a month which then are sent to non-profit organizations. Under the company welfare program, the fraction generated in the purchase of company products are contributed to the Toshiba Group 1.5 Million Tree-planting Project on request of the employees. The amount is doubled by the company before it is sent to the Project organizer, which makes around 50,000 a month.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of " Pink Ribbon mineral water" was donated to the Japanese Cancer Society, about 1 million in a year. A donation of 51,790 yen was provided to the Japan Cancer Society out of the proceeds from the sale of charity Hello Kitty merchandise. The proceeds from the sales of bottles of green tea with original labels promoting the activity of Toshiba's 1.5 Million Tree-Planting project were 483,480 yen and was donated to the Green Fund. This drive started in October 2007, and the amount of caps we have collected so far has reached 742 kg. The proceeds from selling the caps are donated to RE Lifestyle and are used to provide vaccinations to children all over the world. Sold foods preserved in miso that were produced by companies in Ojiya City, which suffered damage from the Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake, through our website and sales shops all over the country, without commission, and donated the gross profits to Ojiya City. Since 2001, we have been donating used stamps once a year to Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service.
Acting on a request from the Flowers and Greenery Council, the company planted 500 boxes of pansies, which were distributed around the city and to local businesses, helping to beautify the community. Employees helped children cross roads safely on the way to their schools, at intersections surrounding our company. ![]() Since 1998, we have kept the tradition of carrying out a monthly clean-up around the factory.
The company signed the “Supporter for the Future of Forests” agreement with Shizuoka Prefecture and Fuji City. For the five years until March 2012, the company will take care of the budget necessary to plant and to nourish the forest as well as make use of the forest by providing environmental education to Group employees. In March 2008, 166 of our employees and 91 of their families volunteered to plant a total of 3,000 trees. As part of Toshiba Carrier's efforts to help train the next generation, company hostes field trips by elementary and junior high school students. The students visit the Air Conditioning System Center (AIRS), as well as the company's wastewater treatment facilities and production lines. The experience helpes them learn about manufacturing and the company's policy towards environment.
Donated 50,000 yen to Fuji City to contribute to beech tree-planting at the foot of Mount Fuji in 2006. In response to the request of local primary school, the whole company cooperates in ensuring the safety of children through such activities as traffic safety, responding to strangers, etc.
Held a summer festival at the playground of the Fuji Complex, where the company entertained 24,000 local people with a wide variety of programs, such as refreshment stands, portable shrine parade and Bon dance. A charity bazaar, selling goods collected from employees took place, and the proceeds were donated to a social welfare organization based in Fuji City.
We exhibited our energy-saving air conditioners and provided a special event for children. The company run a booth at the “Fuji Expo” held at Fuji-san Messe, and had a scientific exhibition on heat, air, and the environment with experiments, environmental quizzes, and displays of energy-saving products. A donation of bench was made to the messe to celebrate its opening. To help expose them to the working world, local elementary and junior high school students were taught about air conditioning, technologies and assembly lines.
To support the relocation of a local after-school day-care center, whose previous building was damaged by the storm in August 2008, we donated unused items collected by employees for their fundraising bazaar, along with 20 cases of bottled water (1.5 L bottles × 160) for an emergency water supply. To celebrate the 133rd year of operation, the 48 companies of the Chubu Toshiba Group solicited 133-Yen Donations, using the proceeds to donate LCD TVs and DVD recorders to a local children's home and other facilities. Total of 237 calendars were collected from employees and donated to children's home and other associations. Also, six companies within the group had jointly collected miswritten postcards and old stamps, which were donated to the Nagoya Social Welfare Council.
Some 55 umbrellas were donated by employees to the Nagoya Transportation Bureau, to be offered to the public as “Friendship Umbrellas” at a local train station. Donated to the Gotemba Communication Corner a flat-screen TV, DVD player and notebook PCs for showing local tourist information and regional specialties. This event was held as a part of the training for new graduate hired employees. Six students with physical disabilities visited us from a school for handicapped in Nagoya City. On the last day, they gave a presentation using computers and exhibited their enthusiasm in work.
Our employees supported the ceremony by volunteering as escorts to people on wheel chairs.
Each affiliate company, branch, and sales office is cleaning their neighborhood periodically. In order to gain more recognition to the achievement by Ichisuke Fujioka, one of the founders of Toshiba and a local citizen, we donated a 52-inch Toshiba LCD TV to the museum, and then played a video of an TV program featuring his life. Employees helped the preparation and the management of the festival at the vocational aid center for the handicapped people. The festival was held to enhance communication with the local community. 55 collected items were sold at the bazaar and the profit was used to buy equipments for the center and also for a new care home. A total of 38,000 yen collected from employees was donated to a local social welfare council to coincide with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony. The money was earmarked for the promotion of volunteerism. Cooperated with a local community to encourage mutual assistance between residents for crime-prevention and disaster-prevention. The company co-hosted a festival to foster close relationships among the residents. This competition held since 1996. Part of the entrance fees and other proceeds were donated to a local social welfare organization to which the company also contributed a special podium and broadcasting equipment designed for physically challenged people.
In 2007, a total of 77,807 yen collected from employees in Shigehara-chiku was donated to the Shigehara Social Welfare Council, and 23,000 yen from Kimitsu-chiku was donated to a social welfare organization.
A class was provided to the 5th graders and their teachers from the Yaehara Elementary School in Kimitsu City on the production process and recycle center. At the affluent treatment facility, an experiment with water was performed and children enjoyed learning about environmental preservation. Also, to help the career education of the 6th graders, we provided a discussion style class to talk about the importance of work and fulfillment in life, as well as the measures taken at our facilities to deal with environmental issue.
Employees and their families participated in the Awa dance for the Shigehara Star Festival. This year, 140 people joined the event, and also HIgashikanto branch distributed fans with featuring the Toshiba logo to the public. We invited teachers from Electronics Industry Department at Keiyo Technical High School for a tour of our production line and an information-sharing session. Employees belonging to the member of the in-house fire brigade of Toshiba Ome Complex participated in the New Year parade of the Ome City Fire Station. This project was started three years ago in cooperation with the Toshiba Ome Complex. Employees are contributing to the clean neighborhood.
Employees participate in the Nebuta Festival, adding to the enthusiasm of the festival together with local people. Employees participate in the Wasshoi Summer Festival, livening up the local summer festival. The Hokkaido and Tohoku Region General Branch and Kagoshima Branch have cooperated with other Group companies and local firms to hand out fliers or put up posters to promote the event. Employees cleaned the drainage along the streets around the office and also weeded and picked up rubbish in the public car park. Employees cleaned two of the 24 sculptures on the Midosuji Street and carefully peeled off posters not to damage the sculpture. At the Chiba Branch and Eastern Japan Order Receipt Center, employees are collecting used stamps. The stamps are donated to the JOCS (Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service). We have installed an AED (automated external defibrillator) at the union's business center, and 41 members of staff attended the first aid seminar. The gym is opened for local sports clubs and elementary schools for more than 20 years. A brass band of a local elementary school that has used the gym for their practice (24 times, a total of 1,980 children) has received a Gold Prize at a national competition. Totaling over 5,200 persons around 200 times have used the facility in one year. During the “Environment Month” in Isogo-ku in Yokohama city, supported the ward office to hold a film day to screen the movie “An inconvenient truth.” Every year, employees clean the area around the company buildings, the public road and to the bus terminal in front of nearby station. In 2006, two internship students from Ferris University spent eight days at the company learning about environmental issues and facility management. As one of the events during the energy saving month, we held a seminar on eco-driving and energy-saving tips for lighting appliances. The members of staff from Isogo-ku Hall and Toshiba employees participated. As a part of Yokohama Climate Change Action Policy (CO-DC30) promoted by the city, we exhibited LEDs and compact fluorescent lamps in Isogo-ku. Students from a local school for disabled children in Kawasaki City were invited to learn some of our management tasks that use computers, such as creating a summary questionnaire or documents contents pages.
Komukai-Toshiba Boys and Girls Inventors' Club is established in June 2004 and is the third such club in Kanagawa Prefecture which is sponsored by Toshiba Science Museum. Approximately 140 elementary and juniors and high school students taking part in one of four courses every month.The head of the R&D Center, serves as its president, while nine researchers and other employees provide guidance for club members. Out of some 202 inventors' clubs across Japan, this is the only one where members receive regular tutoring from active researchers.
Provided Pastel Farm a place on the premises to sell cookies and other items they made at their facility for employees to purchase. The proceeds are donated to support mentally challenged people working at the facility. On 20 November 2008, we were given a certificate of commendation by Kawasaki City for our blood donation since some time around 1975. Has supported this program since 2002, at the request of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education. Teachers of elementary, junior high and special needs schools visit the Center to take part in its employee training program and observation tours of the facilities. For more than 20 years, grounds and facilities have been offered to the local fire department for their training. We have been collecting PET bottle caps to raise funds for the provision of vaccinations to children all over the world. Since the start of the campaign in November 2008, the number of caps collecte has reached 27,520. This is equivalent to vaccinations for 34.4 children.
Together with the Toshiba Micro Electronics Center and the Komukai Operations, emloyees collectes bell marks and donates them to a local elementary school. Visited local elementary and junior high schools and other organizations on request to give lectures and seminars to introduce Toshiba’s environmental protection activities.
Event sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in which high school students experience scientific and technological research at a company. The high school students who participated in this camp deepened their interest in science through lectures and experiments concerning Toshiba's environmental technology. This report was planned and compiled in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden, an environmentally advanced country, and the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems.
Participated in the event sponsored by Kawasaki City on the World Environment Day in 2005, and planted 5,000 trees with the Mayor of Kawasaki City and residents in Kawasaki City.
Local residents were invited to participate in the event to think about the global environment. This event had a variety of activities, such as a demonstration of Toshiba's environmental technology“erasable ink, e-blue”, a seminar using experimental devices, live music, etc., and provided them with a clue to thinking about the environment from their familiar viewpoints. |
