Since 2001, the company donates 200,000 yen to the NPO Project HOPE Japan every year to help provide medical equipment for Asian developing countries. We have started collecting PET bottle caps to raise funds for the provision of vaccinations to children all over the world. Provides the gym for the practice of a local futsal team on Fridays on a regular basis since 2003. In recognition of the company's efforts in the blood drive since 1972, letters of thanks were received from the Governor of Shinagawa Prefecture and the Shinagawa Branch of The Japanese Red Cross Society in 2006. Total number of employees contributed since 1972 are approximately 16,000.
Executives and members of the voluntary promotion committee of each department joined the cleaning initiative around the public bus stop in front of the Operaions. Employee volunteers clean the area between the closest train station to the bus stop once every six months, and the event has continued more than 50 times. Employees were asked to donate used prepaid cards, tickets and unused stamps. In all, 4,500 items were gathered over four months and donated to a local citizen's center. Supporting the “Small Kindness Movement Shizuoka” campaign promoted by Shizuoka prefecture, we joined their clean-up initiative. We participated in the 133-Yen donation of Chubu Toshiba Group and successfully collected 35,620 yen. We joined in the volunteer work to restore the disaster-prevention forest along the coastline that were damaged by a parasitic insect. A total of 1,000 pine trees and broadleaf trees were planted. 1.Shanti Volunteer Association Employees are cleaning the area surrounding the company premises during the lunch break almost every day.

Decorations entertaines local people.Since 2005 the company has asked local elementary school students to submit designs for the Christmas lights on the fence at the company's main gate. in 2006, 290 students from three schools submitted designs, Three were chosen, while 15 were selected as runners-up. Students and families were invited to an awards and lighting ceremony. in 2007, 200 students from three schools submitted designs, and three of them were chosen. Invites local junior high school students to experience two-day hands-on training in inspection processes with the aim of providing them with the opportunity to explore career options. Contributes to Imabari City’s light-up event by providing necessary equipment. The Harison Toshiba Social Contribution Award was established in 2005 to encourage and recognize employee volunteers. Each year, after an in-depth investigation, two outstanding individuals are given the award, based on their contributions to society. One of 2005 winners has served as a kendo instructor for 32 years, while the other has refereed basketball for 22 years. In 2007, two employees were awarded for teaching basketball to local children for 18 years and for teaching Judo in France for 25 years.
The company displayed products and laboratory equipment (cold cathode lamps and LED products) at the festival, an event held to raise interest in creativity and hands-on learning. Engineers also served as instructors for the "Let's Create Something Interesting" class, talking with local children about the relationship between wavelength and color.
The company has cooperated with a local junior high school whose students are studying energy-saving policies and corporate activities. Four students from local junior high schools were invited to the plant to learn about the company's energy-saving measures and energy-saving control systems. A lecture was given on easy and effective energy-saving, such as turning the lights off during lunch breaks and adjusting thermostats so that the air conditioners are not overused. 1.Contribution to Imaji-nishi High School in Ehime Prefecture toward participation to the chapmpionship at Koshien. With the aim of promoting children’s soccer in Imabari City, the company donates 80 free tickets of the Ehime FC soccer games to the Imabari Soccer Association. The company donated some of the red bricks from the building to Ehime Prefectural Science Museum when the building was dismantled. The building was originally built in 1910 as the plant of a textile manufacturer. The bricks are now used as material for research into the history of the textile industry in Imabari City. With the aim of promoting little league baseball in the region, the company donates 140 free tickets of the Ehime Mandarin Pirates baseball games to local little league baseball teams through the Imabari City Government. Donated 200,000 yen to the Imabari City War Story Recording Association to support its efforts to promote peace by passing on Imabari City’s war stories to future generations through the compilation of a book of these stories. Provided a workplace for high school students who were going to take part in “the Second National Skills Competition”. Employees also gave instructions on lathe handling.

Social welfare organizations are invited to hold in-house sales on the company premises for employees to purchase home-made baking and other items made by handicapped people. The proceeds from the sales is used to help the handicapped people to attain financial independence. It started in 2004, and the total sales recorded to date totals more than 1.5 million yen.
Employees of Toshiba Design Center held a design workshop for the second year in the Shibaura Elementary school during summer school. Children were taught how to make their own wallpaper to display on their mobile phones. The work that children made were completed into an animation display by the center's designers, which was then presented to the students. It was also posted on the company's website. This workshop is held for children to discover the pleasure of creative work. Seven students from the Department of Design and Architecture of Chiba University visited the Toshiba Design Center. A presentation was given by the Center employees, followed by a discussion with the students. At the Personal Computer & Network Company, employees collected umbrellas that did not have owners. 91 umbrellas were donated to a volunteer group“WE 21 Japan”and then passed on to people in need of them throughout Asia. Sponsors the tournament to help improve physical and mental strength of the youth, in 2005 and 2006. Provides a conference room of the Toshiba Headquarters Building as the venue for the Real Nature Seminar, organized by the Nature Conservation Society of Japan. As part of the 15th Toshiba Group Environmental Technology Exhibition,“Toshiba Nature Cafe 2006" was held to introduce Toshiba’s environmental protection initiatives and about “Toshiba Forest".
In-kind giving of home appliances was made to a dormitory which NPO Japan Nepal Female Education Association (JNFEA) had built for female teachers in Nepal. JNFEA contributes to empowerment of women in Nepal.
Toshiba, as a member corporation of Canal Beautification Association, gave a lecture to 54 fourth graders at Shibaura Elementary School in Tokyo about the history of canals and the ways to purify polluted water. Sponsored a forum on what local communities can do to support caregivers, where Dr. Takako Sodei (Professor Emeritus, Ochanomizu University) gave a keynote speech, and a panel discussion took place.
First to sixth graders at Shiba Elementary School in Tokyo, challenged to do science experiments using liquid hydrogen entitled “Lets s Experience a World of Ultra-low Temperature”. Given an Achievement Prize as a group that has achieved a 20% reduction in information system operational costs, donated the prize money of one million yen for the training of guide dogs and the welfare of visually impaired people. Gave a workshop for third graders of the local elementary school children to learn about principles of light through making their own hand-made telescopes. In cooperation with BeGood Cafe, an NPO, “Toshiba Nature Cafe”was held at the hall on the 1st floor of the headquarters building. This event provided a clue to starting a social contributions activity.“Toshiba Nature Cafe”was filled with a variety of events, such as provision of information on environmental volunteering programs by organizations, talk show with guests, live music, etc.
Event commemorating the 130th anniversary of Toshiba. Invited local residents to the headquarters building, and helped deepen their understanding of Toshiba through enjoyable activities such as science experiments, concert, talk show, etc., carried out by employees. Collects contributions from employees twice a year when bonuses are paid.
To encourage interest in science among local elementary school students, every year schools are asked to exhibit original inventions that run on batteries or use electrical parts. Prizes are awarded to outstandanding inventions. This year 1,322 students participated in this event. This internship began in 1998. This year, seven students experienced security duties and product packaging. In support of the Hyogo Prefecture's “Business Forest” project, Toshiba has signed an agreement to be responsible for the maintenance of 36 hectares of forest owned by Shiso City for a period of five years. A ceremony was held to plant a memorial tree in celebration. Cooperating with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, employees and their families provided a class titled “Let's play with electricity” for students, in order to help students develop a scientific way of thinking and viewpoint. Children learned about electricity using conducting objects and non-conducting objects. A member of the soft tennis club became One Day Chief of the Aioi Police Station.
Sports facilities in our establishment are open for local sports organizations, care centers and schools. This year a total of approximately 19,000 people used the facilities for a total of approximately 2,000 hours. In corporation with other Group companies within the premises, we held our traditional summer festival. There were several entertainments including a character show for children, and Taiko drumming by local residents. Approximately 5,500 visitors enjoyed the summer holiday event. Every two months, employees collect trash from areas near the factory. Guided tours on the manufacturing process of mobile phones and recycling system are offered to students in local schools.
Employees volunteere to assist in snow removal at residences of senior citizens in Sapporo City. Appreciative words from elderly people make all participants happy. Employees spent two days removing snow from the walkways, roofs and entrances of elderly residents of Sapporo City. Despite the mild winter, certain regions experienced heavy snowfall, so the project was a benefit to many.
Since 2005 the company continues its support for the Sapporo Snow Festival by acting as escorts to the elderly and physically disabled during the four-day event. About 50 volunteers wearing Toshiba hats brave the cold temperatures.
Since 2006, employees including some from Group companies and partner companies joined the Clean-up Day hosted by volunteer groups such as the “Clean up the beach and the sea organization,” and picked up rubbish at the Ishikari Shinko Hama beach.
In cooperation with the Sapporo Consumer Center, “Hand-made Battery Workshop” was held. A group of 24 children and their parent from elementary and junior high schools participated in “Hand-made Battery Workshop.”Employees worked as volunteer teachers, and taught children how to use tools. Children burst into applause when the batteries lit up a light bulb. The company participates in the Toyama UNESCO Association's miswritten postcard collection drive. The Hokuriku Toshiba Group including Business Partner Association are also asked to participate. About 1,000 New Year's greeting postcards and others are collected. Each affiliate company, branch, and sales office is cleaning their neighborhood periodically. Volunteers raked up fallen leaves in the autumn. Fifteen Hokuriku Toshiba Group companies were involved in fund-raising and in-kind giving. The sum of 250,000 yen was donated for social welfare projects in Toyama Prefecture, and Toshiba flat-screen TV set was donated to two different
With Toshiba Hokuto Electronics Devices (Thailand), we visited an elementary school in the disadvantaged part of Issan region of Thailand to donate 13,000 bahts along with stationery and sweets for children. All employees participated in this initiative held in June. Each department was assigned a different flower bed surrounding the company premises. Daily watering activities continued until mid-October.
Creates artworks out of snow and ice in cooperation with local companies and organizations. The snow arts delight and amuse visitors with their air of fantasy. Gives plant tours to local elementary schools to help them develop an understanding of the social studies theme, “People Behind Industrial Production,” and send employees to the schools as a guest teacher to give them a class. This is an annual event to promote the mutual exchange between employees and local communities. This year, brass bands from local elementary and junior high schools entertained the audience with their performance and a lottery draw was held with Toshiba products as prizes. For the last 13 years, blood drive is held three times a year. This time a total of 400 cc of blood were donated by eight employees. Held a “Protect children from traffic accidents” campaign and collected donations totaling 49, 481 yen. Stickers and key holders with light reflective properties were bought and gave to children at local elementary schools. Money collected by employees at the company cafeteria was used to provide trash bins for the local neighborhood association. Provided internship to ten students from local junior high school, high school and colleges. An employee lectured to an open social studies class conducted under the theme of "Japanese industries seen from an international point of view," in which the lecturer talked about the company's magnetron production. This was the last festival as the Osaka Factory will close in March 2008. A total of 18,000 people visited the event including employees and local residents, and enjoyed the time together. To keep cooperative relationship with the local society, a clean-up event was held to pick up rubbish and to remove mud from the drains in the streets around the factory. A total of 203 calendars, 12 pocketbooks, 104 postcards, 2 prepaid cards and 100 g of used stamps were collected from employees and donated to the Social Welfare Council of Kamo City. 896 PET bottle caps were donated to a non-profit organization, Ecocap Movement.
A total of 40 students from the Muramatsu Public High School in Niigata Prefecture made a factory visit. A guided tour in environmental facilities was provided to explain the measures taken at the company for environment preservation. With students from Toshiba Technical School as a main group of participants, users of the center clean the area surrounding the establishment once a week. We regularly invite students who began considering their carrers and give plant tours. Has been providing plant tours for elementary school students for 30 years to introduce small light bulb manufacturing and other processes. Students of Tsushima Junior High School and Tsushima High School visited the company as a part of their social studies.
Employees and retirees from Toshiba and its affiliates led expeditions to clean up cans, bottles and paper trash from the trails in the Tanzawa Mountains. Proposed by the chairman in 2002, the expedition is held once or twice each year. 1.The Shanti Volunteer Association Following the example of Kyushu branch the central office and other branch offices have also started collecting PET bottle caps to donate to the Japan Committee of Vaccines for the World's Children. In response to a request from the Kanagawa Prefecture Information Services Industry Association, company employees provided instruction for an IT engineer training program. In the process, they designed, managed and taught the curriculum for an embedded software course. Participated in the Kawasaki City's event “Candle Light in Kawasaki,” the company joined the simultaneous blackout on the 7th of July. It was the day the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit started to call for measures to prevent further global warming. Employees supported the preparation of bin bags and also joined in mountaineering event while picking and sorting rubbish and asking other climbers to join in. Four computers were donated to an organization which supports visually impaired person. The company employees volunteer their time for this organization. Seminars were provided for Toshiba Group employees on the importance of early detection of breast cancer. For the past year, seminar has been held 36 times at each location and a total of 600 employees have attended. Started in 1990 to teach employees how to drive safely and to reduce traffic accidents, this lecture class has been held 1,800 times. Upon moving into a new office, tables, chairs and cabinets which were no longer in need were donated to a vocational center.
Collected funds from employees. At every monthly morning meetings, collected amount is announced. Funds are donated to The Japanese Cancer Society and The Japanese Red Cross Society. Gives support to employees who wish to qualify as Bousaishi (trained rescuers with the requisite skills to save lives in the event of a disaster). We helped the event by providing computers and network environment. The aim of this event is to promote the exchange between high school students of the two countries. The participants are separated into mixed teams in which they create a Japan-Korea business plan to present it in front of the other participants.
Together with the Toshiba IS Center, donated the prize money of one million yen, which the company had received last year when it was honored by the president as a “group that has achieved a 20% reduction in information system operational costs,” to the Japan Guide Dog Association for the training of guide dogs and the welfare of visually impaired people. Participated regularly in clean-up activities held by local community. We have collected unneeded calendars and donated them to day-care centers in Fuchu City. Children use them to draw on. As a part of the “Seven Exciting Seminar” for employees who have worked for the company for seven years, clean-up walking event was held. This drive was held in every office, and a total of 7,400 caps (worth polio vaccine for 9.3 people) were donated to organizations. Donated office desks, chairs, cabinets, etc. that were made redundant with the relocation of the main office to local social welfare facilities and other organizations through the Kokubunji City Government.
As part of an Environment Month tradition that stretches back to 1993, employees and their families devote the morning of a June holiday to cleaning up city streets, train stations, police stations and city hall. In 2007, 150 employees and 50 family members participated in this wonderful community-minded initiative, disposing of 198 pounds of trash. At the request from the Development and Promotion Bureau of South Iwate, our Administrative Manager visited a local high school to give a lecture for students. We have collected a total of 127,310 yen from employees and then donated it to Kitakami City for planting trees at the east exit of Kitakami station as a part of its renovation project.
Employees with their family visit the social welfare facility for the elderly and change linens, clean windows, etc. This activity started in 1996. Company promotes crime prevention and traffic safety activities in cooperation with neighboring compainies and local residents.
Gave guided tour of the factory's environmental facilities and also held communication hour with the local residents to provide explanation on the company's measures to deal with einvirionmental issues. At the effluent treatment facilities, people were interested in the fact that the standards were even higher than that decided in the agreement on environmental pollution control of the city. Many visitors commented that they were “happy to know that much effort was put in to preserve the environment.” Invited junior high school students to experience boiler inspections and attend a hands-on learning class in which they tried electron microscope analyses in the Failure Analysis Room. Exhibited panels illustrating the company’s industrial waste recycling efforts at the Kitakami Eco Festa. Held six plant tours and guided a total of 157 visitors around the plant facilities in 2006. Held six plant tours, participated by 29 elementary school students, 37 junior high school students, 21 high school students and 20 students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in 2006. Three third-year students from Iwate University were accepted as interns. After being briefed about the semiconductor manufacturing process, as well as the principles behind semiconductors and the characteristics of transistors, the students also received hands-on work experience in the engineering and quality control departments, in 2007. The company's establishment of a local traffic safety council and its implementation of related initiatives were recognized by the Kitakami Police Department, which expressed appreciation for our efforts to improve traffic safety and reduce accidents. Participated in a regional forum as a representative of the private sector and introduced the company’s child-care leave and reduced working hours systems. Provides support for a national singing contest held in the region and festivals contributing to the preservation of regional performing arts.
