Social Contributions Activities Japan[M-O]
At a request from the Department of Material Science and Engineering of Suzuka National College of Technology, and Kurume National College of Technology, a lecture and brief introduction of the company plant tour through three manufacturing departments was provided. Employees are requested to make donations into the employee hand-maded charity box. This year, 41,868 yen was donated to the Shimotsuke Scholarship Foundation for Traffic Accident Orphans Fund and 50,000 yen was donated to the Japan Cancer Society to support Pink Ribbon Activity.
Exhibits paintings drawn by employees in the corridor of Hospital East, National Cancer Center. These paintings help encourage the patients.
As a manufacturer of x-ray mammography systems, exhibits an examination car with an x-ray mammography system and distributes leaflets at the event explaining the importance of undergoing examinations for breast cancer. Purchased hundred of postcards and folders with pictures drawn by physically challenged children. Purchasing of postcards support the growth of those children. We have collected used stamps and prepaid cards to donate them to volunteer organizations to cover their necessary expenses and to help with the financial aid to developing countries. Many social contributions activities were planned during the celebration period (April to December, 2008) of the company's 50th anniversary. The following are some of the major events. We carried out a fundraising event and collection of unneeded items for donation. Proceeds from the 50-Yen donation was used to donate Toshiba products to local social welfare organizations. Old books, CDs, and used prepaid cards collected by employees from their office and home were donated to non-profit organizations. Aiming to encourage interest in science and creativity among children, the Center hosted an “electronics products in the future” drawing competition for 4th to 6th graders of the 13 local elementary schools. Children's pictures portrayed people using electronic products in the future, that they “wished they had” or “thought would be convenient.” All of the 430 drawings were exhibited and prizes were awarded at the LAZONA Kawasaki plaza.
Mochi cooking event was held at Komukai-chiku, Ofuna Office and Semiconductor System Engineering Center Offce. Cooked mochi was sold to employees, and the total profit of 145,733 yen was donated to the Health and Welfare Office of the City of Kawasaki for the benefit of the public.
Holds in-house sales events organized by social welfare organizations.They sell hand-made key rings, aprons, handbags, postcards, cookies and ice cream. The proceeds are donated to support mentally challenged people. This competition is held every year in order to raise awareness of environmental issues among employees. This year, 1,055 and 14 persons submitted for slogan and photograph competition respectively. Makes contributions to festivals organized by local neighborhood associations, while employees participated in the Bon festival dance and other events. Two steam convection ovens were given to a social welfare organization as part of the celebration gift for the occasion of its 20th year of operations. 136 employees cleaned the roads around the factory.
Mie Operations and Group companies based in the premises of the Operations cooperatively collect 1-yen donations, as well as used milk cartons and empty cans, which are converted into cash. In 2005, the sum of 128,219 yen was donated to the Year-end Charity Campaign, sponsored by the Chunichi Shimbun.
Toshiba Mie Operations Group and the Mie Branch of the Toshiba Labor Union have co-sponsored this twice-yearly activity for about 30 years. Participants visit the local social welfare facility for the aged, Mizuho Ryo, to volunteer their help in cleaning and entertain elderly residents by making rice cakes and playing bingo with them. Particularly, elderly residents and staff members of the facility appreciate the cleaning work that these participants do on areas that they find difficult to clean by themselves, such as air conditioner filters by the ceiling and window panes at heights. Many elderly residents look forward to talking with these young volunteers. ![]() Once a week, we invite Alice Bakery from the non-profit organization Peer Misawa to have an in-house sales. We are supporting the financial independence of people with disabilities by purchasing their hand-made bread.
The company has been supporting “Flowering City Campaign” for two years. Employees prepared the soil, and planted flowers which are enjoyed by local communities and visitors. The premise was opened to the public to enjoy 100 cherry blossom trees. Lanterns were installed to illuminate the blossoms during the night. Provides support for many local festivals, including the Miss Veedol Cup (a paper plane competition held in commemoration of the plane which carried the first pilot to fly non-stop across the Pacific Ocean that departed from Misawa City), helping to reinvigorate the region. Donation of LCD TV to the Misawa train station, in 2007. Sponsors a local summer festival and employee volunteers participates in a torchlight procession and assisted in handing out paper fans.
Employees participate in the annual early-summer event - the “Aioi Peron Festival” in the Harima Region, which features boat races open to the public in which teams of 31 people get into a dragon boat and row a total distance of 600 meters (up and down) in perfect unison. This not only help build teamwork, but also give employees the opportunity to interact with local people. Second grade students from Kawakita Junior High School visited the company to learn about jobs at production sites and electric/machinery work.
We have donated copies of the Toshiba original leaflet, “The little prince and the earth,”to three local day-care centers.
An event was held to celebrate the establishment of a new green space inside the factory. Participating community members and families were given the opportunity to plant trees and also given an overview of factory operations.
In cooperation with Toshiba Group Association (Himeji Branch of the labor union), employee volunteers helped to remove the wreckage of houses for the people in Toyooka City who suffered damage by clodding of the Maruyama River. Since 2001, the compamy participated in the clean-up initiative promoted by the local community every month. Wearing a sash saying “Stop cigarette litter” employees picked up rubbish on streets while asking for better smoking etiquette from passers by. Donates 30,000 yen to the Hie Shrine Festival through the local neighborhood association. Students from local high schools visited the company to learn the rules and attitudes required to work in a firm. They also briefly took part in our assembling process. Company cars were provided to local elementary and junior high schools as well as various sports organizations to use at their special events. 100 employees cleaned the car parks and area around the factory. Volunteered to assist with snow removal at the residences of senior citizens in Goshogawara City, a city in a heavy snowfall area. Female employees also participated in this activity and encouraged elderly people living alone by talking with them. Together with employees of other local companies, we have planted a total of 10,000 seedlings of 12 different kinds of trees. Together with employees of other local companies, 300 Toshiba employees cleaned the area around the factory. Calendars, pocketbooks, postcards, prepaid cards collected from employees were donated to the social welfare council of Kamo City. Coins are often found in washing machines to be dismantled for recycling. The company turns in those coins to the police. After 6 month of expiration period for storage, coins are returned to the company. Then the company donates them to the local social welfare organization. The amount given was 100,708 yen in 2005. ![]() To promote the understanding of recycling work, we held a workshop of disassembling air-conditioners. An annual total of about 8,000 participants. Participated in the "Kitakyushu News Shuttle" community TV program. Topic: how to recycle air conditioners. Sponsors several local events including the Himeji Castle Festival, aboshi River Festival, shrine festivals, International Skills Festival For All and Christmas events. The Student Company Program, run by Junior Achievement Japan, was carried out for the first time in Hyogo Prefecture in high schools associated with the University of Hyogo. Two employees spent six months providing instruction to students. In the program, students set up and run simulated companies, selling stock for 1 yen each, holding stockholder meetings and distributing profits among stockholders. Employees picked up littered cans and cigarette butts along the prefectural highway and flowerbeds near the office. Introduced company’s cogeneration system to junior high school students visiting from Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture. Throughout the year, company grounds and the gymnasium are made available to the public on official holidays and other occasions after 5PM. Donated 400 towels to old people’s homes and infant homes where towels and soap are often in short supply through the Himeji Regional Council of Rengo Hyogo. Since 1998, we accept 8th grade students to visit our plant for their social studies field trip. Collects contributions from employees on days when bonuses are paid. The total sum of contributions collected in 2006, 198,900 yen, was used to make consolation payments to employees who have been absent for a long time and others in need, donations to help disaster victims (Hurricane Katrina, Pakistani and Central Java earthquakes) and donations to local social welfare facilities, etc. Every month, 100 yen is deducted from employee wages to contribute to the Nishishiba Traffic Safety Association. A portion of the proceeds (30,000 yen) is donated to the Kobe Shimbun Public Welfare Agency to help children who lost parents in traffic accidents. Provided the garden of the company’s health insurance building to elderly people as a site to hold a cherry blossom viewing party. Old books, CDs and DVDs were sold to Book Off, a used bookstore, with the proceeds going to support NGO JEN's educational work in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Plastic bottle caps were donated to MATE, a volunteer group. The proceeds went toward the vaccination of children in developing countries. The number of caps collected in one year was more than one million. Employees joined a local volunteer center to send New Years greeting cards to the elderly living on their own to ease their anxiety. The aim of this initiative is to donate vaccinations to children in developing countries such as Afghanistan. The number of the collected caps reached 14,920 in six months. Half a million yen was donated to the Toshiba Group's “1.5 million-Tree Planting” project, and the same amount was also donated to the Japan Cancer Society to support “Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.” The decision to contribute to Pink Ribbon was made due to the company's female employees account for 80% of its staff. Over the years, Oita Operations has been contributing to several year-end charity initiatives. It has taken part in the year-end charity event hosted by the Oita City Government for 35 years. Employees performed 20-minute stage shows to entertain more than 2,500 guests and the proceeds were donated to social welfare organizations. In addition, “My Car Club” organized a year-end charity drive for the 20th year. Approximately 500,000 yen was raised and contributed to the Association for Traffic Accident victims. (“My Car Club” is a club made up of employees commuting by cars.).
Toshiba signed an agreement with Oita Prefecture to be responsible for the maintenance of 7.1 hectares of forest in Yufu City, Oita. In the first year, the work was commissioned to the Forestry Cooperative of Oita and 3,300 trees were planted in an area of 1.1 hectares.
The company began a new initiative in 2007 to communicate its environmental policy to local residents and to teach children about environmental responsibility. Classes included demonstrations related to electronic and water pollution, as well as global warming. Not only collecting aluminum cans on premises they are also collected from households. Total of about 40 kg of aluminum cans were collected and sold off to raise charity funds for tree-planting organization. Dispatches employees to serve as lecturers at the “Corporate Management” course at a local university, to introduce company’s business and environmental protection initiatives.
Invited local elementary school children and local self-governing body members, for observation tours of the environmental facilities. And provided hands-on learning sessions and lectures. Students in Taketa High School's rugby club were given instruction by Toshiba Oita Operations rugby team to help prepare them for next year's national rugby competition, to be held in Taketa City. Oita Rugby School, now in its 40th year of operation, requested instructional assistance from the Toshiba Oita Operations's rugby team. Participating junior high school students were eager to improve their technique with the help of the club's instructors. Participated in a volunteer tree-planting activity aimed at creating a park for children to play in. Employees and their family participated in the event to clean the area surrounding the office.
At the Toshiba Mitake Business Forest at Mitake, Ome City, approximately 80 employees planted 1,500 trees, including such types as small oak, Japanese zelkova and mountain cherry. The forest has been featured in newspapers and other media for being the first example of Tokyo's low-pollen forest initiative. The Toshiba Ome Green Supporters, a volunteer group, has committed itself to plant some 12 acres of mountain forest over the next ten years. Held a collection drive for three days, and 9.2 kg of PET bottle caps equivalent to approximately 3,600 caps were collected which is redeemable for vaccines for 9.6 people. These caps were donated to the Japan Committee of Vaccines for the World's Children. ![]() Using Toshiba's original leaflet, “The Little Prince and the Earth,” we taught local elementary school children about the processes of global warming. We also showed them around the environmental facilities and explained to them our measures for environmental preservation. Invites schools and other organizations to visit the production lines of PCs and hard discs on request and introduced about Toshiba's approach to production. Welcomed a total of 69 organizations (1,058 visitors), including the goodwill mission from Boppard City, Germany (sister city of Ome City), in 2006. Invites students from a local junior high school to experience manufacturing processes such as thread fastening, connector wiring and assembly of PCs. Had rewarding feedback saying, this has made me want to engage myself in manufacturing in the future. The gym and rugby field are opened 65 hours a year to local athletic organizations, welfare organizations, high school rugby clubs, etc. Employees donate to the Tokyo Afforestation Promotion Committee. The funds donated were used for the management of forests and afforestation project. We have collected 50 laptop computers that were no longer used at the company, and donated them to non-profit organizations.
Participated in the event, cooperating with the Waste Management Division of the Ome City Government. Gave visitors introductions to environmental initiatives, to increase their awareness on the issue. The Ome City Board of Education encourages local shops, offices and homes, to become shelters for children where they can rush into when seeking help in dangered situations. Located in the residential area, Ome Operations thought it could be of help to the community and registered as one of the shelters in 2006. A rubbish collection clean up effort around the office was held during the Environment Month. Employees' interest in environmental activities is increasing every year, with as many as 452 participants joining in the clean up effort this year. A total of 185.5 kg of trash was collected. |
