Social Contributions Activities Japan[S-U]
As a part of after-school class activity, the company held a DVD disassembly workshop for local elementary school students to explore the wonders of electronics goods.
Four employees volunteered to assist with snow removal at the residences of senior citizens in cooperation with the Toshiba Hokkaido Branch. Collected PET bottle caps were donated to support Yokohama City's project to improve the environmental problems and to send vaccines to children in need. Prepaid cards, entrance tickets, transportation tickets, etc. were donated to Kawasaki Citizen Activities Center. Since 2005, employees have donated their lunch breaks to clean up litter on streets between the local train station and the company building. Additional clean-up efforts on adjacent streets has yielded 4 to 6 pounds of rubbish each time. To support the clean-up initiatives by the Toshiba Group employees at Fuchu Complex, we are managing their cleaning tools as well as collection and weight measurement of collected rubbish. We also patrol the facilities twice a day to check if there are any illegally dumped waste. Sold tissue packs to our employees and donate the profits to people in need. Since 2005, we have been cooperating with junior high schools in Sendai City, and providing internship programs for eighth graders. Students received a lecture on the outline of businesses at our plant and basic electronics. They also tried the assembling and disassembling of a DVD player. Caps of PET bottles collected by employees at the Kansai Building were donated to a non-profit organization, Ecocap Movement, and pull tabs were donated to the Association of barbers in Osaka which promotes the donation of wheelchairs. Funds collected from employees are donated to the Bereaved association of Osaka traffic disaster. Cooperated in initiatives promoted by Fuchu Complex such as clean-ups, blood donation drive, fund-raising, and other activities. Employees at the Yohohama and Sagamino Operations cleaned the roads and parks in their neighborhood and collected a total of 350 kg of rubbish. Employees'families and local residents were invited to this event and enjoyed many performances including a jazz band of a local elementary school. We cooperated in clean-up initiatives promoted by Toshiba Fuchu Complex, and also in Atsugi City's campaign to discourage littering. Employees regularly clean nearby bus stops and drainage around the office by picking up littered cigarette butt and PET bottles.
1,500 participants, including 39 Toshiba Group employees and their families and local communities, collected illegally-damped rubbish at Yashima Island Setonaikai National Park. United under the banner of "Cleaning Our city Ourselves," the branch president and department heads joined City residents to clean up a symbolic road.
A total of 2,000 participants including 40 Toshiba Group employees and their families and from the local companies, joined this event to remove illegally abandoned rubbish on roads around the airport. 150 employees are cleaning the area surrounding the office during lunch break everyday. Responding to a request from Fukushima Medical University's School of Nursing, the company introduced students to how health and safety is approached in the business world. Several students from Higashi-Ojiya Junior High School were given hands-on work experience at the company. Inspection duties were among their responsibilities.
Employees participate in matching yukata, and dance to the music of Niigata Jinku and Sado Okesa. Wearing vests sporting the company logo, employees work to clean up the local environment.
A total of 64 employees at the Niigata Group companies, in jackets sporting Toshiba company logo, cleaned the Toyanogata lagoon with other participants from the local communities and companies, contributing to the preservation of the habitat for many aquatic birds. We collected a total of 130 unused calendars as well as used stamps and prepaid cards, and donated them to a volunteering organization. We also collected 40,840 caps of PET bottles, which were sent to another organization to raise funds for the provision of vaccinations to children in developing countries. Clean Day is carried out twice per year in conjunction with health and safety committee. Employees collect used postage stamps and donate to the Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service. This event is held every year, as a part of the training for new employees. Contributed one year subscription of Asahi school cildren newspaper to local elementary school.
We regularly host an environmental forum to have a place to discuss the relevant issues with the local residents. Every year, a lecture is given by a guest: “Message from the forest” by Mr. Clive W. Nicole in 2006, “Change Japan from Mount Fuji” by alpinist Mr. Ken Noguchi in 2007, and “Marine environmental change captured through a finder” by an underwater photographer Mr. Ikuo Nakamura in 2008. This event is sponsored by Fuchu City, and we have around 500 people attending every year. We also introduce some of the measures taken among Toshiba Solutions Group for environmental preservation. We are supporting this event to foster the next generation of IT specialists. This year, students from China were invited to introduce international perspectives to the event. After the contest, they visited the headquarters of Toshiba and also the Toshiba Science Museum.
Exhibited at the Festa and gave children and other visitors the opportunity to think about the environmental actions that can be easily done at home. Collect and donate used postage stamps to local social welfare organizations. A total of 37,800 yen worth of miswritten postcards and unused stamps were collected from employees and donated to the Child Fund Japan to support their projects to improve the health and nutrition of people in Nepal and to improve the quality of life of minorities in Philippines.
The purpose of this project was to support the 59 villages in the area south of Sahara and in Democratic Republic of Congo, which are designated as “the most underpriviledged region” in the world by the United Nations and the World Bank. Clothes, towels, soaps, and postage were collected from our employees, and those items were delivered to people in need through the Motherland Academy International. Every card was carefully handwritten by the employee volunteers hoping to brighten their New Year. Saved up the points earned from purchasing toners for the printer, and exchanged them for crayons to donate to the JOICEF (Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning), who promotes the “Crayons to Afghanistan” project. As a part of efforts to preserve the environment, employees are recommended to bring their our own chopsticks for lunch. Used disposal chopsticks are also collected to be recycled to make paper. We are sponsoring a clean-up event promoted by Mainichi Shimbun Corporation and a non-profit organization, the Fujisan Club. In 2008, a total of 181 employees participated in the initiative from Fuchu Engineering Center, Fuchu Solutions Center, Shinagawa Office, Toshiba IT-Services Corporation, Toshiba Process Software Corporation, Toshiba KN System Corporation, Toshiba Products Marketing, and Toshiba Solution Business Associates Corporation. They cleaned the area around the premises and also engaged in the management of “Business Forest” in Takao. Water tanks were installed so that firefighters can use the water case of emergencies. First implemented in 2003. Illuminated signboards etc. are turned off to raise awareness of the importance of CO2 reductions. Helped reforest a typhoon-damaged area near the southern slopes of Mt. Fuji. We collected caps of PET bottles and donated them to the non-profit organization “RE Lifestyle” to be used in their campaign “Send vaccines to the world's children by PET bottle caps.”The amount collected in three months reached 17.2kg (approximately 7,000 caps, worth polio vaccinations for 17 children). We support the employment of disabled people by purchasing Phalaenopsis orchids grown by them. 53 pots were bought since April 2008. With the joint donation from the former president and employees totaling 424,500 yen, 110 fire alarms were presented to the households of the elderly throughout Fuchu city. Employees volunteered to help with the installation of the alarms.
Employees voluntarily contribute to“Toshiba TEC Social Contributions Fund”each month from their salaries. The amount saved-up in the Fund and the same amount from the company is donated.
Visits were made with the cooperation of Toshiba Science Museum and TEC Engineering Corp. to provide education classes at elementary schools. The experience oriented classes by the GEMS Program helped children to learn how to think by themselves and to have a better understanding of environment issues.
We placed charity vending machines within the premises and collected a total of 241,052 yen. It was donated to the Community Chest of Tokyo.
Establish opportunities to communicate with local residents in many places. The festival had many programs all families could enjoy, and succeeded at each place.
At the request of Kanagawa Prefecture, we participated in the event, Agenda Day, which took place in Yokohama City. Our exhibition consisted of panels on “E-blue: reduce paper waste by using erasable ink” and “Environment-conscious shopping (food mileage, consumption of local products, and not using plastic shopping bags).”
Agreeing with the Mishima City's policy to foster clean water and forests, we cooperated with their project of dam making in the forests of Hakone Mountain. A portion of the proceeds from fundraising items sold by employees is regularly donated to a local elementary school. In 2007, 13 sets of books on environmental issues were donated to the school via the Hadano Board of Education. Employee volunteer group started this activity in 1992. Cleaned the roads around the company, rivers in the neighborhood and the local social welfare facilities for the handicapped.
Since 2004, some 147 children of employees have taken part in a home energy reduction program, with 8 being recognized internationally for their efforts. Five employees who have received international recognition as instructors in this field have assisted a total of 888 elementary school students in this area. Schools have also been provided with educational materials. In addition, on-site instruction at schools is provided under the Kids ISO program.
The company developed an environmental education program in cooperation with the Toshiba Science Museum and Teaching Kids to Love the Earth, an NPO. The program was taught by employees at three Tokyo elementary schools as part of their environmental curriculum.
Two elementary schools, one in Aomori and one in Tokyo, were connected through the Internet using Toshiba equipment and children had a 90-minute long video meeting. They had a good time interacting with their counterparts in a remote city.
At environmental events held in Tokyo, Yokohama, Chiba, Utsunomiya, Kitakyushu, employees helped in the management of the event. The company also cooperated in setiing up a booth and provided flowerpots and gardening gloves made by recycling old uniforms as free gifts to people participated in the evet. One million yen was donated from employee wages to the Central Community Chest This is a program where children play a leading role to reduce energy use at home. Employees with an instructor license help students at elementary schools by evaluating and giving advice on their plans for energy saving. The company also provided funds for workbooks at school. We continued this activity from 2007 of raising funds for the provision of vaccinations to children all over the world. 84.4kg of caps were collected. To preserve the appearance of the area, we cleaned the waterways running across the premises of the Nitta factory.
Local residents were invited to celebrate the event's 34th anniversary. Participated in the Cambodian volunteer activities sponsored by the labor union for the purpose of establishing sanitary facilities around the school. ![]() Participated in the “Send vaccines to the world's children by pet bottle caps” campaign hosted by a nonprofit organization “RE lifestyle.” Since 2000, clean-up day is held on the first business day of the month. Volunteer employees clean the area surrounding the company. Employees of the four companies in the Toshiba Teli Group (Toshiba Teli, Teli Engineering, Teli Trading and Nippou Industry) donated a total of 126,856 yen. Supporting the campaign promoted by Kobe distribution Center Liaison Council, we have donated a total of 1,200ml of blood.
5 elementary school students, including some of our employees', visited our operations in Ohito with their families and had a tour of the premises. They also tried some of the processing work. Employees cleaned the area around the Repair Center in Saitama and Kansai Complex.
The company’s Mie Operations has contracted out jobs, such as removal of roll paper from copper wires and aluminum materials, to vocational aid centers for mentally and physically challenged people since 1999. In addition, the company invites people from these facilities once a week to the office to provide vocational training such as dismantling of PC and other skills to promote their independence. The company received a special commendation from the Mayor of Yokkaichi City for this activity in 2005.
A total of 5,000 visitors each year̶ students, the general public and visitors from abroad̶learn about the recycling of home electronics as part of the company's initiative to raise awareness of global environmental problems. Sponsoring the energy-saving activities of elementary school students in Yokohama City who tried to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through household energy savings during the summer vacation.
Once a year, we invite representatives of local communities to show them our facilities and emergency drill while explaining the outline of business operations. Participated in the open boat race at the Aioi Peron Festival, an early summer tradition in Harima, with a dragon boat of 31 crew members that traversed the 1,970-foot course. Aiming to contribute to the local community, employees hold a cleaning activity every month. Since 2007, the fifth graders at Yobe Elementary School (about 50 students) make a visit every year to learn about our factory. When cleaning the Kashiwa warehouse, clean-up of surrounding area and inspection of the locations that are designated as potentially dangerous was also conducted. To celebrate the 133rd year of operations, the 33 companies of the Tohoku District Group solicited 133-yen donations, using the proceeds to donate a 42-inch LCD TV to the Onagawa Health Center for the Elderly and to the Ishinomaki Cultural Center. Items collected from employees were provided to the local social welfare center to be sold at their bazaar. The proceed was used to support the local handicapped people. To celebrate the 132nd year of operations, the 30 companies of the Tohoku District Group solicited 132-yen donations, using the proceeds to donate a 47-inch LCD TV and VHS-DVD recorder to the Ishinomaki Community Support Center for Handicapped. To celebrate the 131st year of operations, the 20 companies of the Tohoku District Group solicited 131-yen donations, using the proceeds to donate a 37-inch LCD TV and VHS-DVD recorder to the Ishinomaki Central Community Center for Children. A total of 24,248 yen was collected from employees and donated to the Community Chest of Osaka Prefecture. Eye exam equipment and eyeglass manufacturing devices were loaned out free of charge in support of an eye exam program for athletes participating in the Special Olympics. The company provided the ground for local community events such as evacuation drill, AED demonstration and festivals.
We are supporting the work experience and internship program of local junior high and high schools.
We held an event to light up the establishment using green energy. One employee dressed up as Santa Claus to entertain the visitors. Children took pictures and played a quiz with Santa.
The company's Christmas lights display was open to the general public for local residents to enjoy the holiday atmosphere. Employees dressed in Santa's clothes entertained children with photo taking. The purpose of this event was to promote a better understanding of environmental issues. We helped with the planning and preparation of the event, as well as with the general in-site management.
Devices for collecting after-quake data, together with trained members of staff, were sent to the area. The funds collected from employees were also donated to help the victims of the earthquake. Four sophomores from Shuzenjikogyo High School in Shizuoka Prefecture participated in production activities on the assembly line as part of an internship program. We held a blood drive twice a year, and a total of 19,600ml of blood was donated from 54 employees. Collecting telephone cards, postage stamps and prepaid cards through out the year. We first started the collection in July 2007. This year, collection boxes were placed at three operations and a total of 790kg of caps (worth vaccinations for 396 people) were collected. |
