Abstract

To meet the recent demand for low-voltage operation and low power consumption, we have developed an LCD controller-driver LSI, model T6C86, using an advanced 0.8 m CMOS fabrication process.@ The T6C86 LSI consists of a display data memory (RAM) and its controller-driver circuit on one chip.@ The use of fully static circuits realizes low-voltage operation at as little as 1.8 V, and the built-in voltage quadrupler circuit also enables low-voltage operation of the LCD drive.

As a result, the T6C86 LCD controller-driver LSI features a low operating voltage of 1.8 to 5.5 V, and a low current consumption of 6 A (display mode, at 3 V, 33 kHz crystal oscillator, quadrupler pump-up frequency 4 kHz, no load, standard contrast setting), 35 A (data access mode, at 3 V, access cycle Tcyc100 kHz), or 0.9 A (LSI stop mode, at 3 V).@ These low-current-consumption characteristics make solar battery driving possible, and also extend the battery life of the portable communicator.@ In addition, we have adopted a 122-pin tape carrier package (TCP) and a gold-bump chip for thin-type or high-density assembly.
