Tokyo-The nine founders of Japan's first enterprise to bring digital satellite broadcasts and value-added information services to mobile users today announced that their joint-venture, Mobile Broadcasting Corporation, will be formally incorporated on May 29, 1998. The new company will offer wide-ranging broadcast services that current communication- and broadcast-satellite based services cannot provide.

Once incorporated, Mobile Broadcasting Corporation will propose its system specifications to the Telecommunications Technology Council, the organization charged with establishing a standard for mobile broadcasting, and expects to obtain a broadcasting license in 1999. Infrastructure will be installed, and a satellite launched in 2000, in preparation for the start of nationwide digital broadcasts in 2001. Broadcasts, including high quality music and video and information services, will be on the 2.6GHz waveband. This bandwidth allows use of antennas much more compact than those typical of home systems, and enables signals to be received even in vehicles moving at high speed.

Four more companies will invest in Mobile Broadcasting Corporation by October this year, and its initial capitalization of 500 million will rise to 40 billion.
