Toshiba to Launch World's Brightest TFT LCD for Industrial Application

19 September, 2000

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today announced commercialization of the brightest thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal displays (LCD) yet developed for use in industrial applications. The company will launch two displays: a 12.1-inch color reflective LCD with a luminance of 450 cd/m2, and a 10.4-inch display with a luminance of 400 cd/m2. Samples of the new displays are now available. Mass production of the 10.4-inch display will start in November and of the 12.1-inch display in February 2001.

Brightness and sharpness are key characteristics of TFTs used in industrial applications ranging from factory-automation control systems to point-of-sales terminals and ATM systems. Such industrial-use displays require a higher luminance than the displays found in personal computers and other products, but frequently incorporate touch panels that diminish brightness. Toshiba's new displays incorporate high performance backlights that achieve the highest level of luminance yet achieved in LCDs for industrial application.

The new products expand Toshiba's already comprehensive line-up of industrial-use LCDs all of which are supported by optional dedicated inverters for their backlights. They will be on display at the CEATEC JAPAN Exhibition 2000, from October 3, in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
