Toshiba's New Pocket PCs Extend Functionality and Expandability

First Pocket PCs in Market with Both SD and CF-II Slots

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it is entering the fast growing market for personal digital assistants with two Pocket PCs designed to offer business users higher levels of performance and unrivaled expandability. The GENIO e550 integrates a package of productivity tools supported by a fast CPU and 32MB of main memory, and is the first Pocket PC on the market to offer two expansion slots. The high-end GENIO e550/MD adds a 1GB MicrodriveTM to this powerful platform, capacity enough to store downloads of both business and entertainment files. The GENIO e550 will be launched in Japan on August 20 and the GENIO e550/MD will follow at the end of September.

New capabilities are driving demand for PDAs and taking them from the consumer market into the more demanding business market. Market analyst IDC projects that this year's worldwide market of 13.52 million units will grow to some 30 million in 2004. With this expansion will come demand for higher levels of functionality and interoperability with corporate IT systems, including groupware, SCM and CRM. Toshiba's new GENIO e Pocket PCs are expressly designed to meet such needs.

The GENIO e series runs the Intel(R) StrongARM Processor 206 MHz, the fastest available for Pocket PC applications, and the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) for Pocket PC operating system. The CPU and the provision of 32MB of DRAM memory assure high speed processing of software optimized for the Pocket PC OS, including Pocket versions of Microsoft(R) Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer and the Windows(R) Media Player, all of which are integrated into the GENIO e series. Data synchronization and downloads from PCs are supported by a USB cradle.

With the GENIO e series, Toshiba draws on the cutting-edge technologies the company has pioneered in the development of portable PCs and cellular phones, including high-density mounting technology for multi-layer circuit boards. The result is a light, stylish package; a slim 17.5mm and only 180 grams with battery, that nonetheless integrates the two latest advances in expansion slots: an SD slot for the Secure Digital Input-Output card and SD memory card and a CF-II slot for compact flash cards. Toshiba and numerous third-party developers support these slots with diverse applications, including memory cards, PHS data communication cards, modem cards, Bluetooth TMcards and barcode readers. Other cards, GPS and wireless LAN modules among them, will come to market soon.

The new GENIO e combines high performance with a comfortable user interface, both indoors and outdoors, thanks to a bright, clear 3.5-inch front-light reflective TFT LCD supporting 65,536 colors and 240 x 320 pixel resolution. The display is highly suited for applications such as playback of MPEG-4 video sources on Windows(R) Media Player Ver. 7.1.

As a leading solutions service provider for business, Toshiba will position the GENIO e series as a key mobile product within wider systems. In this connection, and in order to promote of GENIO e to meet a wide range of customer needs, Toshiba has agreed partnership contracts with ten of Japan's leading system integrators: ITOCHU TECHNO-SCIENCE Corporation; Japan Communications Inc.; Kanematsu Communications Ltd.; Mitsui Knowledge Industry Co., Ltd.; Nihon Unisys Ltd.; Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.; NTT-ME Corporation; Toshiba Engineering Corporation; Toshiba Information Equipment Co.; Ltd. and Toshiba Personal Computer System Corporation. These companies will support integration of GENIO e into systems.

The GENIO e series will be displayed at Wireless Japan 2001, to be held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center from July 17 to July 19, 2001.
