Toshiba Starts Mass Production of Half-height DVD-ROM Drive with DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW Read

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation has reinforced its leadership in advanced optical-disc drives by introducing a new half-height, 16x speed DVD-ROM drive with DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW read functions. The new drive is 41.5mm high, and ideally suited for integration in desktop PCs.

The SD-M1612 integrates a Toshiba-developed LSI designed to support high-quality read of DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW. The new drive will give users of desktop PCs access to the increasing range of data stored on high capacity DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, including video sources. The new drive realizes a maximum read speed of 2x for DVD-RAM, 16x for DVD-ROM and 48x for CD-ROM.

Mass production started in September, allowing Toshiba to strengthen its extensive line-up of optical storage media.
