Toshiba Launches High Capacity 2.5-inch HDDs with World's Fastest Rotation Speed for 9.5mm Drives

6 February, 2002

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today further reinforced its technological and performance leadership in 2.5-inch hard disk drives (HDD) with the launch of high capacity drives that achieve a disk rotation speed of 5,400rpm, the fastest speed yet achieved in a 2.5-inch disk with a height of only 9.5mm.

The three new HDDs announced today, in 20-, 30- and 40 gigabyte capacities, all employ fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motors that realize a combination of high-speed performance and lowered noise. The faster rotation speed is supported by an increased buffer memory capacity of 16MB that improves the rate of data throughput and PC system operation. The drives also realize an areal density of 34.7 gigabits per square inch and the high reliability of 7,840m/s2 (800G) non-operating shock.

High-capacity, high performance HDDs are essential for new generations of portable and space-saving personal equipment. Toshiba is the pioneer in small form-factor HDD, and its range of 2.5-inch HDD offers technical excellence and cutting-end performance, backed up by a rugged design and reliability. The new drives announced today are suitable for high-end portable PCs and desktop PCs.

Mass production of the new products will begin in February.
