BIEN HOA CITY, DONG NAI PROVINCE, VIETNAM and TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) has announced that Toshiba Industrial Products Asia Co., Ltd., the company's high-efficiency industrial motor manufacturing and sales base in Vietnam, today celebrated the official opening of its new production facility with a traditional ceremony and reception.

The new facility will manufacture high-efficiency industrial motors rated at 100 horsepower or less. Its construction began in April 2009 on an approximately 80 thousand square meter site at Amata Industrial Park in Dong Nai province, on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, and the completed facility has a floor area of approximately 24 thousand square meters. In FY2015, the plant will ship up to 1.2 million motors a year to the global market, and is expected to provide employment for approximately 500 people. Initial products will be exported to the USA, which is taking the lead in legislating for high-efficiency motors, and subsequently to China, the rest of Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe and Japan.

A growing global awareness of the need for enhanced environmental protection has spurred demand for high-efficiency motors that consume less power and emit less CO₂. Governments are also responding to this trend. The manufacture and sale of motors meeting higher levels of efficiency than current regional standards is expected to become mandatory in the United States in December 2010, and other governments are expected to follow suit. These legislative moves will spur demand, and the ratio of high-efficiency motors is expected to increase substantially. Key features of Toshiba high-efficiency motors include their low noise, high reliability and achieving 30% reduction of energy loss.

Alongside Toshiba's three existing manufacturing bases, Toshiba Industrial Products Manufacturing Corporation in Japan, Toshiba International Corporation in the United States, and Toshiba Dalian Co., Ltd. in China, Toshiba Industrial Products Asia Co., Ltd. now forms a manufacturing and sales system serving the global market. By expanding production at all four facilities and responding to demand for high-efficiency motors that meet global standards and satisfy the requirements of individual countries, Toshiba Group targets motor business net sales of \70 billion by FY2015, and will strive to secure a market share that places it in the top three in the industry.
