9 Jun, 2011

Tokyo, Japan – Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that, with its Italian power systems subsidiary, Ansaldo Trasmissione & Distribuzione S.p.A (Ansaldo T&D), it has signed a Collaboration Agreement with the city of Genoa, Italy, on cooperation toward achieving Genoa's smart city plan.

The agreement calls for Toshiba, Ansaldo T&D and Genoa to cooperate in advancing the city's energy efficiency by applying Toshiba Group's advanced smart community technologies in a number of projects under Genoa's ambitious "Genoa Smart City" plan. Sites targeted include industrial areas, sites along rivers and waterways, and expressways, large entertainment facilities, exhibition centers and museums in the city.

The European Commission is seeking to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon smart community technologies. Under its Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan), the Commission is promoting Smart Cities Initiatives with the goal of creating 20 to 30 advanced low-carbon model cities. The key metric for these cities is to reduce greenhouse gas by 40% by 2020.

Genoa, home to Italy's largest port, established the Genoa Smart City Association in May 2010, in order to enhance its economic growth and quality of life.

Toshiba and Ansaldo T&D, which undertakes engineering of power transmission & distribution networks and photovoltaic plants, will support Genoa in realizing advances toward a smart city, and aim to expand its smart grid and smart community businesses in Europe.
