Toshiba's SCiBTM Rechargeable Battery
Selected for Idling Stop System of Suzuki's New Type Wagon R

6 Sep, 2012

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that its innovative SCiBTM rechargeable battery is an integral part of ENE-CHARGE, an innovative power management and highly efficient regenerative braking system introduced in the Wagon R and Wagon R Stingray, the latest versions of Suzuki Motor Corporation's best-selling "kei car" compact vehicles.

The SCiBTM was selected for ENE-CHARGE, following a comprehensive evaluation of the battery's performance, fast charging characteristics and long operating life.

Toshiba's SCiBTM adopts Lithium titanate oxide in the battery anode, achieves rapid charge and a long battery life in wide range of environments. In extremely cold conditions the SCiBTM is less likely to experience lithium metal deposition, which increases the risk of internal short circuiting and battery degradation. The 3Ah SCiBTM battery for the Wagon R series, offers high power with a compact cell size; as much as 6,000W/liter at 25 degrees Celsius and 1,400W/liter at -10 degrees Celsius*1.The cell surpasses other batteries in its ability to charge the large output of electricity generated by regenerative braking system, which is used to power on-board electronics. The SCiBTM and the lead battery can be harmonized in the same system without any need for a voltage transformer, reducing the parts count and cost.

Toshiba has already supplied 20Ah SCiBTM batteries for three EVs*2 Toshiba will use the momentum from selection of SCiBTM technology by auto industry leaders to promote its further application in EV. The company will also continue to promote use of the SCiBTM in other areas, including as a stationary power storage device and to control frequency fluctuation in smart grids.

Notes:Figures in this release are based on Toshiba test data. The specification may be revised without prior notice.
