Toshiba Celebrates finalization of Smart Community Center in Kawasaki, Japan

11 Apr, 2013

TOKYO—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it has completed the construction of its Smart Community Center in Kawasaki, Japan. The new center will be the base for Toshiba's organizations in Japan involved in the smart community businesses.

Construction of the 15-story building started in July 2011 and is scheduled to open in October this year. It will provide a business base for approximately 7,800 people from Smart Community related businesses and divisions, including cloud solutions, and Toshiba Group companies. The consolidation of related staff in a single location, which will be completed within FY2013, will facilitate closer cooperation with Toshiba's nearby R&D centers and social infrastructure engineering and manufacturing facilities. It will also support Toshiba's continuing promotion and expansion of its smart community business.

The Smart Community Center will incorporate an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS), making the building itself a showcase for smart community solutions, and will be the key center for the smart community project that Kawasaki city is currently promoting. A quake-absorbing structure, uninterruptible power supply, emerging power supply will allow operations in the building to continue, and contribute to early recovery from disaster.

The new center integrates the latest ICT, control systems and sensors to secure a comfortable, energy-efficient, disaster-resistant work environment. It includes the following features.

  1. Low energy operation with smart BEMS
The new building will consume only 68%[1] of the energy and emit 46%[2] of the CO2 of an equivalent conventional building, due to Toshiba's smart BEMS technologies for real-time tracking and visualization of power consumption; green elevators that closely match movement to demand; LED lighting throughout the building; environmentally conscious, reliable power sources and high-efficiency air conditioning system
  2. A comfortable, low energy office environment
The air-conditioning system uses sensors to detect the changing presence or absence of people in the building, and compares the results again a range of models of energy use. Air-conditioners are then set at a level that provides comfort while reducing energy consumption. The lighting controlling system uses image sensor technologies to control that lights individual spaces by sensing a presence.
  3. An emergency-resistant environment
Toshiba's latest BEMS technology also offers disaster-resistant functions. An uninterruptible power supply system monitors load capacity in each area of the building, and its importance in an emergency situations, and controls power feeds to air-conditioners, lighting, elevators and OA equipment. Elevators automatically switch to back-up SCiB batteries brown outs. Overall, the building can operate for at least 72 hours in an emergency situation, as it houses two 1,500vA emergency power generators and a large capacity water receiving tank for providing clean water and water for services.
