Toward longer life and value improvement of existing rolling stock

Durability and reliability are emphasized in the equipment and systems installed in rolling stock and are designs that can operate for a long period of time. However, the present condition is that railway technology has made rapid improvement, and if the set life span is exceeded, performance and value reduction cannot be avoided. And they cannot live up to the recently requested performance level. Toshiba supports refurbishment for existing rolling stock renewal and for performance improvement. With energy-saving, cost-cutting, reduced maintenance, environmental impact reduction and reliability as the goal, we commence by offering a solution through improvement or hybridization.

Improvement of Efficiency

Saving energy by renewing the traction motor with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM).

In current rolling stock propulsion systems, one major cause of energy loss in the components and systems is the induction motor. Toshiba proposes replacing it with a propulsion system that achieves phenomenally high efficiency with a combination of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and peripheral equipment. Wide reduction in power consumption and shortened maintenance time can be expected.

Hybrid conversion

A battery system for emergency running as a supplemental installation handles the possibility of a power failure.

Toshiba proposes a supplemental installation of a rechargeable battery SCiB™ as an emergency electric storage device so that even when the power supply suddenly stops, running rolling stock can travel a certain distance or can travel in the yard without a power supply.
